The pope named Bishop Richard Gerard Lennon, titular of Sufes, auxiliary of the same archdiocese and rector of St. John's Seminary, as apostolic administrator until a new archbishop is appointed. On the same day, the Vatican Press Office release a statement from the cardinal concerning his resignation, and the archdiocese of Boston published a statement from Bishop Lennon in relation to his appointment, Crónica - 2002.
- On December 7, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation from the pastoral government of the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, Hungary, submitted by Cardinal László Paskai, O.F.M., according to canon 401 §1 of the Code of Canon Law. The pope named Bishop Péter Erdo, titular of Puppi and auxiliary of Székesfehérvár, as the new archbishop of that see, in Crónica - 2002.

- On November 30, 2002, the Vatican Press Office announced that Pope John Paul II had accepted the request presented by Cardinal Bernardin Gantin to be dispensed from the office of dean of the College of Cardinals and of the title of the suburbicarian see of Ostia, keeping only the title of the suburbicarian see of Palestrina. Moreover, the pope approved the election, done by the cardinals of the order of bishops, of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, of the title of the suburbicarian see of Velletri-Segni, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, as dean of the college, and of Cardinal Angelo Sodano, of the title of the suburbicarian see of Albano, secretary of State, as vice-dean of the same college, in Crónica - 2002. Cardinal Ratzinger becomes bishop of the title of the suburbicarian see of Ostia, assigned to the dean of the college, in addition to Velletri-Segni.

- On November 5, 2002, at noon, in the altar of the chair of the patriarchal Vatican basilica, took place the mass for the repose of the souls of the eight cardinals and 106 bishops who died during the year. The celebration was presided by Pope John Paul II who had the homily and imparted the apostolic blessing. The mass was concelebrated by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, secretary of State, with the other cardinals. The cardinals who have died since November 6, 2001 are: Paolo Bertoli, bishop of the title of the suburbicarian see of Frascati, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints and former camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church (November 8); Franjo Kuharic, archbishop emeritus of Zagreb, Croatia (March 11); Louis-Marie Billé, archbishop of Lyon, France (March 12); Alexandru Todea, archbishop emeritus of Fagaras si Alba Iulia, Romania (May 22); Johannes Joachim Degenhardt, archbishop of Paderborn, Germany (July 25); Lucas Moreira Neves, O.P., bishop of the title of the suburbicarian see of Sabina-Poggio Mirteto, archbishop emeritus of São Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for Bishops, and president emeritus of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America (September 8); François Xavier Nguyên Van Thuân, president of the Pontifical Commission Iustitia et Pax (September 16); John Baptist Wu Cheng-chung, bishop of Hong Kong, China (September 23), in Crónica - 2002.

- Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of the Peoples, will be special papal envoy to the celebrations of the Third National Eucharistic Congress of Benin that will be held in Dassa-Zoumé, November 22-24, 2002, in Crónica - 2002.
- In a letter, dated March 19, 2002, Pope John Paul II has given permission to Cardinal Bernardin Gantin, bishop of the title of the suburbicarian sees of Ostia and Palestrina, to resign the deanship of the College of Cardinals and return to Benin, his country of origin. Also, the pope gave him the title of dean emeritus when the resignation becomes effective. The cardinal bishops will meet on November 27, 2002 to elect a new dean. The other cardinal bishops are Joseph Ratzinger, vice dean and prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; Angelo Sodano, secretary of State; Roger Etchegaray, president emeritus of the Pontifical Council Iustitia et Pax; Alfonso López Trujillo, president of the Pontifical Council for the Family; and Giovanni Battista Re, prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. The election needs to be confirmed by the pope to take effect and this is expected in a few days. Cardinal Gantin plans to return to Benin on December 4, 2002, in Crónica - 2002.
- Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation from the pastoral government of the archdiocese of Toledo, Spain, submitted by Cardinal Francisco Álvarez Martínez, according to canon 401, par. 1, of the Code of Canon Law. To succeed him, the pope appointed Antonio Cañizares Llovera, until now archbishop of Granada, in Crónica - 2002.
- Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of the Peoples, will be special papal envoy to the solemn celebration of the 1950th anniversary of the arrival of St. Thomas the Apostle in India and the 450 years of the beginning of the mission of St. Francis Xavier. Both celebrations will take place in Ernakulam, India, November 16-17, 2002, in Crónica - 2002.

- On October 1, Pope John Paul II accepted the resignation submitted by Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estévez, from the prefecture of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and at the same time named new prefect Cardinal Francis Arinze, until then president of the Pontifical Council for the Inter-Religious Dialogue, in Crónica - 2002. The new president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialog is Michael Louis Fitzgerald, M. Afr., titular bishop of Nepte, until now secretary of that dicastery. He was also elevated to the rank of archbishop.
- To succeed the late Cardinal François Xavier Nguyên Van Thuân in the presidency of the Pontifical Commission Iustitia et Pax, Pope John Paul II appointed on October 1, Renato Raffaele Martino, titular archbishop of Segerme, until now permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations Organization (UNO), in Crónica - 2002.

- The mortal remains of Cardinal Stefano Borgia (1789), who died in Lyon, France, on November 23, 1804, and had been buried in the metropolitan cathedral of that city, were transferred to Velletri on February 13, 2002. A solemn mass was concelebrated in the cathedral of Velletri by the local bishop, Andrea Maria Erba, and the secretary of the archbishop of Lyon. The remains were reburied in that cathedral, March 9, 2002.
