(17) 2. HERMANN (ca. 995-1056)

Birth. Ca. 995, Lorraine. Son of Palatine Count Ezzo von Lothringen and Mathilde, daughter of Emperor Otto II and Theophanu. Brother of Duke Otto of Swabia. His sisters were Richeza, queen of Poland, who bequeathed her heritage to the see of Cologne and is buried in its cathedral; and Theophanu, abbess of the monastery of Stiftes Essen. Uncle of Dukes Konrad von Kärnthen and Konrad von Baiern. He was called "the Noble". He is also listed as Heriman; as Herimanni; as Herimannus; and as Hermann II bei Rhein.

Education. Probably at the imperial court.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Cologne and prince-elector after August 1036. Consecrated (no information found).

Cardinalate. Presbyter cardinalis of an unknown title ca. 1036. Archchancellor and librarian of the Holy Roman Church; succeeded in those posts Pilgrim, archbishop of Cologne and first archchancellor of the Holy Roman Church, who died on August 25, 1036. Before end of 1036, he accompanied Emperor Konrad II to Italy. He most probably accompanied Emperor Heinrich III, whom he had strongly supported during the Lothringen turmoil, to Rome in 1046; after that visit, Pope Gregory VI, accompanied by Ildebrando, future Pope Gregory VII, was sent off to reside in Cologne. On June 29, 1049, he celebrated the feast of St. Peter in Cologne, together with Pope Leo IX and Emperor Heinrich III; the pope granted and confirmed important privileges to the church of Cologne. In the fall of that same year, he met the pope in the Council in Mainz. In 1050, he dedicated with great ceremonies and in the presence of the emperor the Goslarer Marienkirche. Subscribed papal bulls issued between March 1051 and April 1054. As archbishop of Cologne, he baptized in 1051 Heinrich IV, the son of Emperor Heinrich III and his wife Empress Agnes. During the rebellion of his nephew Duke Konrad von Baiern against the emperor in 1052 and 1055, he remained loyal to the emperor. On July 17, 1054, in Aachen, he crowned Henry IV as king of German; the coronation sparked a protest from the archbishop of Mainz, because he claimed the right of coronation for himself. During the reigns of Emperors Konrad II and Heinrich III, he was the first man in the realm.

Death. February 11, 1056, Cologne. Buried in the metropolitan cathedral of Cologne.
