(49) 1. SAINT-VICTOR, Can. Reg. of Saint Augustine, Hugh de (1078/1097-1140/1142)

Birth. 1078/1097, Corvey, manor of Hartingham, Saxony (1). He descended from the family of the counts of Blankenburg in the Harz, Saxony. He was related to Reinhard, bishop of Halberstadt, who founded the monastery of Hamersleben. He is also listed as Hugo de S. Victore, Ugo di San Vittore and Ugone da Sanvittore.

Education. Joined the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine at the monastery of Hamersleben, near Halberstadt, at a young age. Sent abroad by the bishop of Halberstadt, he traveled with his uncle, Archdeacon Hugh of Halberstadt; he first obtained relics of the martyr Victor at Marseilles and then went to Paris.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). In Paris, around 1115, he settled in the newly founded monastery of Saint-Victor. From the mid-1120s until his death, he was the leading master at the school of Saint-Victor. He signed official acts in 1127, 1139, and again between 1133 and 1140. Prior of the monastery of Saint Victor from 1133 until his death. He left the abbey only a very few times, once to visit the papal court of Pope Innocent II, either in France or in Italy.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal bishop of Frascati in the consistory celebrated in December 1139. Consecrated (no information found). He was the most famous of the theologians before Tommaso d'Aquino, future saint. In his time, he was compared to Saint Augustine.

Death. February 11, 1140 (or 1141 or 1142), at the infirmary at Saint-Victor, Paris. Buried (no information found). His ashes were transported to the chapel of Saint Denys, Paris, in 1335.
