Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Eustachio in the consistory of February/March 1158. Subscribed papal bulls issued between April 24, 1158 and July 30, 1159; February 26, 1161 and July 27, 1165. Participated in the papal election of 1159, in which Pope Alexander III was elected. Between 1159 and 1168, he conducted three legations in Hungary and Dalmatia; during the first two, he obtained the recognition and the reinforcement of the obedience to Pope Alexander III; during the third, the ordering of the ecclesiastical conditions of the kingdom. In 1164, he went to Sardinia where he tried to bring the Camaldolese of northern Italy to the recognition of the pope. Opted for the order of cardinal priests and the title of S. Lorenzo in Damaso in 1165/1166. Subscribed papal bulls issued between November 11, 1166 and July 17, 1174; and June 18 and July 7, 1182. He maintained close relations with England and the English court.
