Participated in the first papal election of 1187, in which Pope Gregory VIII was elected. Participated in the second papal election of 1187, in which Pope Clement III was elected.

Birth. Ca. 1120, Bosham, Sussex, England. His father became a priest after Herbert's birth. His first name is also listed as Eribert and as Herebert; and his last name as Bossenhan.
Education. Studied canon law under Lombardo da Piacenza at the Cistercian monastery of Potigny, France. Obtained a doctorate in theology at Oxford University. He was a Hebraist, theologian, philosopher, poet and orator.
Early life. Before 1157, he entered the household of Thomas Becket, chancellor of England, and became his clerk and later his chancellor. After Thomas became archbishop of Canterbury, he was his closest and most loyal supporter; he stood by the archbishop at Clarendom and at Northampton during the controversies with King Henry II of England; they escaped together in one horse; he arranged the escape of Archbishop Becket to the continent, accompanied him in exile and undertook several dangerous mission on his behalf; he returned to England with the archbishop; when the latter was assassinated, he had been sent in a mission to France (by the archbishop) and, much to his regret, was not present at his martyrdom. Exiled by the king, he went to Rome.
Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of in the consistory of December 1178 (1); his deaconry is not known.
Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Benevento in 1179; he refused the promotion. Did not participate in the papal election of 1181, in which Pope Lucius III was elected. He wrote a biography of Archbishop Becket between 1184 and 1186; he also wrote Liber Melorum, in praise of the martyred archbishop. Did not participate in the papal election of 1185, in which Pope Urban III was elected.
