(9) 1. PECORARA, O.Cist., Giacomo da (between 1170 and 1180-1244)

Birth. Between 1170 and 1180, Cicogni, a hamlet in Pecorara, Piacenza. Of a noble family. Son of Torniello and brother of Gherardo. He was probably uncle of Cardinal Giacomo da Castell'arquato (1251). His first name appears as Jacopo and as Jacobus; and his last name as Pecorari and as Pecoraria.

Education. (No information found).

Early life. Cleric of the church of S. Donnino, Piacenza. Archdeacon of the metropolitan cathedral chapter of Ravenna 1211-1219. Went to France and entered the Order of the Cistercians at Clairvaux in Borgogne in 1215.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Returned to Rome. Penitentiary in the pontificate of Pope Honorius III. Auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota ca. 1227. Elected abbot of the monastery of Trois-Fontaines, near Clairvaux, in 1231.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal bishop of Palestrina in the consistory of September 1231; elected again on October 17, 1234; consecrated on March 15, 1235. Legate before Emperor Friedrich II, with Cardinal Oddone de Monferrato, in January 1232. Legate in Hungary, before July 1232 and the spring of 1234. Legate in Tuscany, May 1235. Legate in Lombardy, June 1236 to February 1237. Named vicar of Rome in 1238. Legate in Provence in September 1239. On his return to Rome, he was captured by Enzio, son of the emperor, and taken to Pisa with Cardinal Oddone de Monferrato (1); by taking them to that city, the emperor expected to impress the two cardinals favorably in order for them to mediate with the pope in the matter of his excomunication in 1239; after the death of Pope Gregory IX on August 22, 1241, the emperor had them transferred to Tivoli, near Anagni. Subscribed the papal bulls issued between May 5, 1234 and June 23, 1239; September 23, 1243 and April 26, 1244. Did not participate in the papal election of 1241, in which was elected Pope Celestine IV. At the beginning of March 1242, the two cardinals were transferred to Capua; the following month, after the death of Pope Celestine IV, they were again taken to Tivoli; he was freed in May 1243. Participated in the papal election of 1241-1243, in which was elected Pope Innocent IV. Named vicar of Rome again. He was very appreciated by the Romans, who called him an angel descended from heaven.

Death. June 25, 1244, Rome. Buried in the Cistercian monastery of Clairvaux, next to the tomb of St. Malachy (2); his head and a finger were deposited in a marble urn in the choir of the cathedral of Piacenza; three hundred and sixty years later, when the choir was remodeled, Bishop Claudio Ragone had them moved to the contiguous chapel of S. Martino (3).

(1) On May 3, 1241, in front of Pisa, between the island of Montecristo and the Giglio, took place a famous battle between the Genovese, who were transporting numerous prelates to the council convoked by Pope Gregory IX in Rome, and the Pisans led by Enzio, son of Emperor Friedrich II. Among the prelates were Cardinals Giacomo da Pecorara, returning from France; and Oddone da Monferrato, returning from England; and future Cardinals Pierre de Colmieu, archbishop of Rouen; and John of Toledo, O.Cist. All the prisoners, except the two cardinals, were taken to Rocca di San Miniato; on June 10, 1241, they were transferred by sea to Naples, and then to Amalfi.

Birth. (No date found), Saintonge, France. Of a noble family. Son of Bertrand, seigneur de Pons, called le Fort, and Elizabeth de Toulouse. Brother of Ponce, bishop of Saintes (1257-1266).

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Périgueux ca. 1220. Consecrated (no information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of 1231; his title is not known (1). He does not appear among the signatories of papal bulls issued in his time.

Death. Ca. 1232, (no place found). Buried (No information found).
