(6) 1. VISCONTI, Giovanni (?-1278)

Birth. (No date found), Piacenza. Nephew of Pope Gregory X, on his father's side.

Education. "... fuosse uomo di gran dottrina... " (1).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal bishop of Sabina in a consistory celebrated after March 1275 (2). Consecrated (no information found). Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals in September 1276 (?). With Cardinals Simon de Brie and Matteo Rosso Orsini, he was named judge in 1276 in the cause of the postulation, made by the cathedral chapter of Monreale, of Giovanni, bishop of Potenza, to that metropolitan see.

Death. Between July and November 1277, Rome. Buried (no information found).

Annuaire Pontifical Catholique 1929, p. 127; Cardella, Memorie storiche de' cardinali della Santa Romana Chiesa, II, 8, says that he was created cardinal during the Second Council of Lyon in replacement of Cardinal Bertrand de Saint-Martin, but the latter died on March 28, 1275 and the council was held in 1274. There are doubts that he was ever promoted to the cardinalate.

(7) 2. CECCANO, O. Cist., Teobaldo di (ca. 1229-1279)

Birth. Ca. 1229, Ceccano, Campania. Of the counts of Terracina. His first name is also listed as Tibaldo. Relative of Cardinal Giordano Pironti (1262). Other cardinals of the family were Gregorio Gaetani (1099); Giordano di Ceccano, O.Cist. (1188); Stefano di Ceccano, O.Cist. (1212); and Annibaldo di Ceccano (1327).

Education. Entered the Order of the Cistercians when he was 19 years old.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Abbot of the monastery of Fossanova in 1274; Tommaso d'Aquino, future saint, died in that monastery on March 7, 1274, assisted by him. Accompanied Pope Gregory X to the Second Council of Lyon (1274).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in a consistory in 1275; his title is not known (1). He was named legate in several ocassions.

Death. 1279 (no place found). Buried (No information found).
