COLONNA, O.E.S.A., Egidio (ca. 1243/1247-1316)

Birth. Ca. 1243/1247, in the Colonna district, Rome. Of a noble family. Youngest of the five children of Pietro Colonna, signore of Genazzano. The other siblings were Pietro, Cecilia, Stefano and Annibale; they all were Roman nobles. He is also listed as Ægidius Romanus; as Ægidius a Colonna; as Egidio Romano Colonna; as Ägidius von Rom; as Egidio Romano; as Giles of Rome; and as Gilles di Roma. His belonging to the Colonna dynasty is under discussion.

Education. Entered the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine (Augustinians), when he was an adolescent. His parents and friend tried to make him leave the religious life but he persevered in his intention. When he turned fifteen years old, he was sent to Paris, where he was a wonder of excellent talent and made great progress in his studies. He was one of the most outstanding students of Tommaso d'Aquino, future saint, in the Augustinian Study of Paris, 1269-1271. He studied philosophy, Sacred Scriptures, theology and sciences at La Sorbonne University. He obtained a baccalaureate in 1271. Having had all the requirements, he was given permission to pursue a magister degree.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Étienne Tempier, bishop of Paris, who as a stubborn and obstinate a man, had several professors of the university, on March 7, 1277, unjustly condemned the writings of Tommaso d'Aquino and Egidio Colonna. Disgusted with the controversy, he returned to Italy in 1279. His good reputation and fame were not affected by the unjust decision of the professors, and he was received with joy by the members of Roman province and the former general of the order. He was elected definitor in three chapters of the Order, including the one celebrated in Toscanella in 1285. He went to see the pope and declared that he humbly would do whatever was decided by the pontiff. Pope Honorius IV accepted the innocence of Egidio and in an assembly of the professors of La Sorbonne in Paris, convoked after the pope sent a letter dated June 1, 1285, his condemnation was revoked and he was granted the title of magister in October 1285. He again took the chair of theology at the university, his fame spread exceedingly. For the visit of King Philippe IV, le Bel, of France to La Sorbonne, he composed his famous oration on justice. He was a famous theologian, founder of the Augustinian school; because of his learning, he was called "fundatissimus doctor". In 1287, his teaching was declared a religious doctrine. Elected prior general of his order in 1292; occupied the post until 1295.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Bourges and primate of Aquitaine, April 25, 1295. Consecrated (no information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal by Pope Boniface VIII (1). He wrote numerous ecclesiastical and theological works. His treatise "De ecclesiastica sive summi pontificis potestate" was the basis for Pope Boniface VIII' bull "Unam sanctam", in which Pope Boniface VIII asserted his rights against King Phillip IV, le Bel, of France. It is not known if he participated or not in the conclaves of 1303, which elected Pope Benedict XI; and 1304-1305, which elected Pope Clement V. He built the chapel of S. Trifonio in his Roman convent. He participated in the Council of Vienne, celebrated in 1311, in which the knight Templars were condemned. Their house in Bourges was purchased by the Augustinian Order. He was present at the death of Pope Clement V in Rocquemaure-en-Gard, on April 20, 1314. He did not participate in the conclave of 1314-1316, which elected Pope John XXII.

Death. December 22, 1316, at the papal curia, Avignon. His body was transferred to Paris and buried in the Augustinian church in that city (2)

Beatification. He was inscribed as a blessed in the Augustinian martyrology.

(1) This is according to Chacón, Vitæ, et res gestæ Pontificvm Romanorum et S. R. E. Cardinalivm, II, col. 334-336. Eubel, Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi, I, 36, denies that he was elevated to the cardinalate. "Essai de liste générale des cardinaux. Les cardinaux du XIIIè siècle". Annuaire Pontifical Catholique 1929, p. 137, says that he may have been created cardinal, reserved in pectore and never published, but this is unlikely because the practice of reserving cardinals in pectore started in the pontificate of Pope Martin V, 1417-1431.
