Birth. (No date found), Allassac, diocese of Tulle, France. His first name is also listed as Raynaldus; and as Reginaldus.

Education. (No information found).

Early life. Archdeacon of Combrailles, Limgoes. Canon of the cathedral chapter of Le Puy; later, in 1293, vicar general of the diocese.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Limoges, ca. November 15, 1294; he celebrated a synod. Consecrated (no information found). Promoted to the metropolitan see of Bourges, December 31, 1316; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate. Nuncio in Flanders in 1317.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo in the consistory of December 20, 1320. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Ostia e Velletri, March 1321. Obtained in commendam the title of S. Prassede, August 1, 1321. He prescribed the rubrics for the recitation of the divine office.

Death. July or August 1325, Avignon. Buried in the cathedral of Limoges.

(11) 2. LA TOUR, O.F.M., Bertrand de (ca. 1265-1332/1333)

Birth. Ca. 1265, Camboulit, near Figeac, diocese of Cahors, France. Of an ancient noble family. His last name is also listed de La Tour d'Auvergne; and as Augier de la Tour.

Education. Entered the Order of the Friars Minor (Franciscans) at the convent of Figeac in the custody of Rodez. Studied theology in Toulouse and Paris. Maître in theology, Paris, 1311 (?).

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Regent of the Studium of Toulouse, 1311-1312. Provincial of Aquitaine in 1312; he opposed the Spirituali. On January 29, 1317, he was sent to northern Italy to mediate between Guelfi and Ghibellini; when he surpassed the powers that had been given to him, he tried to justify himself, writing to the pontiff. On November 17, 1318, with Bernard Gui, he was named legate with the charge of solving the conflict between France and Flanders. Vicar general of his order. Inquisitor in France.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Salerno, September 3, 1320. Consecrated, October 21, 1320, by Cardinal Bérenger de Frédol, seniore, bishop of Frascati; never entered his see. He received the pallium. The pope granted him several important benefices in France.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Vitale in the consistory of December 20, 1320; retained the administration of his see until April 30, 1321. In the controversy over poverty, he supported the point of view of his order and entered into conflict with the pope, especially when he expressed his views in the general chapter of Perugia in 1322; he was admonished by Pope John XXII with the bull Cum inter nonnullos of November 12, 1323, and he made his submission to the pontiff. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Frascati after June 1, 1323, when Cardinal Frédol died. On Ash Wednesday 1327, he preached before the papal court in Avignon. After the deposition of Minister General Michele de Cesena on June 13, 1328, the pope entrusted Cardinal La Tour with the government of the order as vicar general; he exercised the post until June 10, 1329. In the general chapter of Paris, which he convoked, and thanks to his influences, his compatriot Gérard Études was elected minister general of the order on June 11, 1329. He was authorized to make his will August 13, 1330. He intervened in the public consistory of October 21, 1331. He was a remarkable orator, theologian (doctor famosus) and a man of extensive culture and experience but not with diplomatic ability.

Death. End of 1332 or beginning of 1333 (1), Avignon. Buried in the church of the Franciscans (Cordeliers) in Avignon; on March 8, 1333, the dispositions of his will began to be carried out.

Birth. Ca. 1280/1288, Montpezat, diocese of Cahors, France. Son of Raimond II des Prés, seigneur of Montpezat, and Aspasie de Montaigut. His last name is also listed as de Pratis; as del Prato; as Després; and as Prez.

Education. Obtained a doctorate in civil law at the University of Toulouse.

Early life. Professor of law at the University of Toulouse. Provost of Clermont. Papal chaplain. Auditor of causes of the Apostolic Palace from 1316; as such, he intervened in the process of Hugues Géraud, bishop of Cahors.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Riez, March 31, 1318. Consecrated, May 7, 1318, Avignon, by Cardinal Niccolò Alberti, O.P., bishop of Ostia e Velletri. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Aix, September 11, 1318; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of December 20, 1320; received the title of S. Pudenziana after January 28, 1321. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Palestrina, May 25, 1323. Vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Church, April 1325. In 1329, he was charged with reforming the statutes of the University of Toulouse. Participated in the conclave of 1334, which elected Pope Benedict XII. Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, June 1336. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI. Legate before King Philippe V Valois of France and King Edward III of England in 1342 to negotiate the peace between them; he was able to arrange a truce in Malestroit on January 19, 1343. Built the collegiate church of Saint Pierre in Avignon. Participated in the conclave of 1352, which elected Pope Innocent VI.

Death. May 16, 1361 (1), of the plague, at an advanced age, Avignon. Buried on June 13, 1362, in the tomb he had built in the church of Saint-Marin in Montpezat, where he had founded a collegiate chapter.

Birth. (No date found), Archiac, Saintonge, France. Son of Aymar II, seigneur d'Archiac, and Marguerite de Rochechouart. He had four brothers, Aymar, Foucaud, Guillaume and Aymery; they all followed a military career, except Guillaume, who became a Franciscan (Cordelier).

Canon of the cathedral chapter of Saintes in 1318; later its dean; in 1318, he was sent before Pope John XXII by King Philippe le Long of France for important state affairs. Papal chaplain. Counselor of King Philippe V of France. On his return from the papal court, he was promoted to the episcopate.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Vienne, September 3, 1319; the pope announced the election to the king of France the following September 19; on November 9, he received permission to prorogue his episcopal consecration for a year. Consecrated (no information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Prisca in the consistory of December 20, 1320; named administrator of his archdiocese the following day; kept the post until February 27, 1321. On May 5, 1323, in Avignon, he prepared his will.

Cardinalivm, II, col. 418, says that he died in 1330; Johann Heinrich Zedler and Carl Günther Ludovici. Grosses vollständiges Universal-Lexicon aller Wissenschafften und Künste (64 v. Birth. (No date found), diocese of Cahors, France. Close relative (nephew?) of Pope John XXII. His first name is also listed as Raignie; and his last name as Ruffo; as Russo; and as Rosso.

Education. (No information found).

Early life. Protonotary apostolic.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Maria in Cosmedin in the consistory of December 20, 1320. Pope John XXII held a grand banquet in his honor in March 1321. Opted for the order of cardinal priests and the title of S. Crisogono in 1325.

Death. November 1325 (1), Avignon. Buried in the church of the Franciscans (Cordeliers) in Avignon.
