Birth. 1598, Siena. Of a noble family.

Education. (No information found).

Early life. At the end of his youth, he got married and had children, and lived in the court of the grand-duke of Tuscany. His wife died, and a long time after her death, his friend, the new Pope Alexander VII, called him to Rome and named him chamberlain of honor. Canon of the patriarchal Vatican basilica May 29, 1657. Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal and reserved in pectore in the consistory of April 29, 1658.

Episcopate. Elected titular patriarch of Constantinople, June 3, 1658. Prefect of the Apostolic Palace and of the Cubiculi of His Holiness, governor of Castelgandolfo, and assistant at the Pontifical Throne, June 5, 1658. Consecrated, June 10, 1658, at the church of S. Caterina di Siena, Rome, by Cardinal Scipione Pannocchieschi d'Elci, archbishop of Pisa, assisted by Neri Corsini, titular archbishop of Damieta, and by Carlo de' Vecchi, former bishop of Chiusi. Published in the consistory of April 5, 1660. Received the red hat and the title of S. Martino ai Monti, April 19, 1660. Legate in Romagna, May 5, 1660; entered his legation on the following June 16; occupied the post until 1664. Did not participate in the conclave of 1667, which elected Pope Clement IX; died during its celebration.

Death. June 5, 1667, in his Roman palace, during the sede vacante. Exposed and buried in the patriarchal Lateran basilica, below the tomb of his ancestor Pope Alexander III (1198-1216).

Early life. Cleric of the Apostolic Chamber. Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber, 1654.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal and reserved in pectore in the consistory of April 29, 1658; published in the consistory of April 5, 1660; received the red hat and the deaconry of Ss. Cosma e Damiano, April 19, 1660.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Rieti, May 5, 1660. Granted dispensation for not having yet received the sacred orders, May 5, 1660. Consecrated, June 6, 1660, Sunday, at the church of S. Maria in Vallicella, Rome, by Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi, assisted by Cristofor Segni, titular archbishop of Tessalonica, and by Ottaviano Carafa, titular archbishop of Patras. Participated in the conclave of 1667, which elected Pope Clement IX.

Death. July 31, 1667, near noon, in the palace where he resided in Piazza Nicosia, Rome. Exposed and buried in the tomb of his uncle in the church of S. Pietro in Vincoli, Rome. A memorial to the late cardinal was placed over the west door of the cathedral in Rieti (1).

(13) 3. FRANZONI, Giacomo (1612-1697)

Birth. December 5, 1612, Genoa. From a noble, rich and influential family, which gave Genoa several senators and a doge. Son of Marquis Anfrano Franzoni and Girolama Fieschi. Another cardinal member of the family was Giacomo Filippo Fransoni (1826). His first name is also listed as Jacopo; and his last name as Franzone; and as Fransoni.

Education. Studied law at the University of Bologna; because of the plague, he had to go to the University of Padua to continue his legal formation; once the plague disappeared, he returned to the University of Bologna to study theology; and also obtained a doctorate utroque iure, both canon and civil law.

Early life. At sixteen, against the will of his family, decided to embrace the ecclesiastical state. Went to Rome in 1639. Referendary of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature, 1639. President of the Apostolic Chamber, 1641. Cleric of the Apostolic Chamber and president delle Strade, 1642, and later delle Armi. In the pontificate of Pope Innocent X, he was named general treasurer of the Apostolic Chamber; and president delle fortezze marittime, 1654. Prefect delle milizie of the Papal State. Declined promotion to the cardinalate and to the episcopate at the see of Ferrara offered by Pope Innocent X. President of the milizie of Castle Sant'Angelo, Rome, 1655.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal and reserved in pectore in the consistory of April 29, 1658; published in the consistory of April 5, 1660; received the red hat and the deaconry of S. Maria in Aquiro, April 19, 1660. Legate in Ferrara, May 5, 1660; occupied the post until 1664.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Camerino, June 7, 1666. Consecrated, June 13, 1666, church of Santa Maria in Vallicella, Rome, by Cardinal Neri Corsini, assisted by Carlo de’ Vecchi, former bishop of Chiusi, and by Emilio Bonaventura Altieri, former bishiop of Camerino. Participated in the conclave of 1667, which elected Pope Clement IX. Opted for the deaconry of S. Maria in Cosmedin, January 14, 1669. Participated in the conclave of 1669-1670, which elected Pope Clement X. Opted for the order of priests and the title of S. Pancrazio, May 14, 1670. Opted for the title of S. Maria in Aracoeli, February 27, 1673. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals, January 15, 1674 until January 28, 1675. Participated in the conclave of 1676, which elected Pope Innocent XI. Opted for the title of S. Maria della Pace, April 30, 1685. Opted for the order of bishops and the suburbicarian see of Frascati, November 10, 1687. Participated in the conclave of 1689, which elected Pope Alexander VIII. Participated in the conclave of 1691, which elected Pope Innocent XII. Opted for the suburbicarian see of Porto e Santa Rufina, September 28, 1693. Sub-dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals (1). Resigned government of the see of Camerino before November 23, 1693.

Death. December 19, 1697, Rome, after an eighteen months illness. Exposed and buried in the church of S. Maria in Vallicella, Rome according to his expressed will, a testimony of his devotion for Saint Filippo de Neri.
