Birth. July 4, 1677, Naples. Sixth of the seven children of Francesco Maria Carafa, prince of Belvedere and marchis of Anzi, and Giovanna Oliva Grimaldi, of the princes of Gerace. His first name is also listed as Pier Luigi; and as Petrus Aloysius; and his last name as Caraffa. Other cardinals of the family were Filippo Carafa (1378); Oliviero Carafa (1467); Gianvincenzo Carafa (1527); Carlo Carafa (1555); Diomede Carafa (1555); Alfonso Carafa (1557); Antonio Carafa (1568); Pier Luigi Carafa, seniore (1645); Carlo Carafa della Spina (1664); Fortunato Ilario Carafa della Spina (1686); Francesco Carafa della Spina di Traetto (1773); Marino Carafa di Belvedere (1801); and Domenico Carafa della Spina di Traetto (1844).

Education. He went to Rome in February 1689 and studied at La Sapienza University, Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in utroque iure, on October 19, 1694.

Early life. Referendary of the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace, April 1, 1699. Privy chamberlain of His Holiness, 1699. Vice-legate of Urbino, July 19, 1701 until 1703 (1). Governor of Camerino, September 7, 1703. Governor of Ancona, January 8, 1705. Cleric of the Apostolic Chamber, January 12, 1708. President delle Ripe, 1709. Majordome of Cardinal Renato Imperiali when he went to Milan as legate a latere before Emperor Karl VI, who was returning from Spain in 1711. President delle Strade, July 6, 1712 to 1713. Received the minor orders, December 27, 1712, from Cardinal Francesco Pignatelli, in the cardinal's private chapel; the subdiaconate, from Cardinal Pignatelli, January 15, 1713, also in the cardinal's private chapel; and the diaconate, January 22, 1713.

Priesthood. Ordained, February 19, 1713, by Cardinal Francesco Pignatelli, archbishop of Naples, in the cardinal's private chapel.

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Larissa, March 27, 1713. Consecrated, April 2, 1713, Naples, by Cardinal Francesco Pignatelli, archbishop of Naples, assisted by Francesco Maria Carafa, bishop of Nola, and by Oronzio Filomarini, bishop of Gallipoli. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, April 16, 1713. Nuncio in Tuscany, July 20, 1713 until 1717. Secretary of the S.C. of Propaganda Fide, April 12, 1717 until 1724. Consultor of the Supreme S.C. of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, September 1722. Secretary of the S.C. of Bishops and Regulars, November 1724.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of September 20, 1728; received the red hat and the title of S. Lorenzo in Panisperna, November 15, 1728. Abbot commendatario of Ferraria, 1729. Participated in the conclave of 1730, which elected Pope Clement XII. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals, February 11, 1737 until January 27, 1738. Opted for the title of S. Prisca, December 16, 1737. Protector of the Order Camaldolese in 1739. Participated in the conclave of 1740, which elected Pope Benedict XIV. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Albano, September 16, 1740. Sub-dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals. Opted for the suburbicarian see of Porto e Santa Rufina, November 15, 1751, customarily assigned to the sub-dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals. Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals. Opted for the suburbicarian see of Ostia e Velletri, proper of the dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, April 9, 1753. He was most generous with the poor.

Death. December 15, 1755, at 8:30 p.m., Rome. Transferred the following day to the church of S. Andrea delle Fratte, Rome, where the capella papalis took place on December 18, 1755; and buried in the chapel of San Francesco di Sales, in that church (2). On the left side of the chapel was erected a monument in his memory with his statue genuflecting before the altar of the saint.

(25) 2. ACCORAMBONI, Giuseppe (1672-1747)

Birth. September 24, 1672, Castel de Preci, diocese of Spoleto (or diocese of Norcia). Of humble parents. Baptized on that same day. His last name is also listed as Accorambonus.

Education. Initial studies with the Jesuits in Spoleto; the at the school of Luca Palma, Preci (economics); later, at the University of Perugia (doctorate in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, May 6, 1694).

Early life. Consistorial lawyer. Auditor of Cardinal Michelangelo Conti, future Pope Innocent XIII. Secretary of the Congregation of Avignon. Sub-datary of His Holiness, May 13, 1721. Secretary of the Congregation of Avignon. Lawyer of the Roman people for life, August 20, 1721. Auditor of Cardinal Michelangelo Conti, future pope Innocent XIII. Canon of the patriarchal Vatican basilica, 1723. Auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota.

Priesthood. Ordained, February 14, 1723. Referendary of the Supreme Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace, March 15, 1723. Reappointed sub-datary of His Holiness, June 7, 1724.

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Filippi, September 11, 1724. Consecrated, September 21, 1724, Pauline Chapel, Vatican, Rome, by Pope Benedict XIII, assisted by Mundelio Orsini, titular archbishop of Corinto, and by Pierre-Guérin de Tencin, archbishop of Embrun. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, October 6, 1724. Uditore Santissimi, 1726. Abbot commendatario of S. Ilario di Galeata. Consultor of the SS.CC. of Rites and of the Roman and Universal Inquisition. Episcopal examiner. Transferred to the see of Imola, with personal title of archbishop and retaining all his other posts, April 12, 1728. He restored the cathedral and the seminary of Imola and celebrated a diocesan synod in 1738.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of September 20, 1728; received the red hat and the title of S. Maria in Traspontina, November 15, 1728. Participated in the conclave of 1730, which elected Pope Clement XII. He resigned the see of Imola on February 22, 1739. Participated in the conclave of 1740, which elected Pope Benedict XIV. Opted for the title of S. Maria in Trastevere, September 16, 1740. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Frascati, March 11, 1743.

Death. March 21, 1747, around 9 p.m. Exposed in the church of S. Ignazio, Rome, where the capella papalis took place on March 23, 1747; and buried in front of the altar of S. Aloisio Gonzaga in that same church. His tombstone, magnificently adorned, has an inscription engraved by his nephew Count Ignazio Accoramboni, counselor to the king of Poland (1).
