(34) 1. COLONNA, Prospero (1672-1743)

Birth. November 17, 1672, Castle di Marino, near Rome. Second of the seven children of Filippo Colonna, Neapolitan and Venetian patrician, Roman noble and signore of Sonnino, and Cleria Cesarini, of the princes of Genzano. Cousin of Cardinal Carlo Colonna (1706). Great-uncle of Cardinal Nicola Colonna di Stigliano (1785). Other cardinals from the different branches of the family were Giovanni Colonna (1212); Giacomo Colonna (1278); Pietro Colonna (1288); Giovanni Colonna (1327); Agapito Colonna (1378); Stefano Colonna (1378); Oddone Colonna (1405; later Pope Martin V); Prospero Colonna (1426); Giovanni Colonna (1480); Marco Antonio Colonna, seniore (1565); Ascanio Colonna (1586); Girolamo Colonna (1627); Girolamo Colonna (1743); Prospero Colonna (1743); Marcantonio Colonna, iuniore (1759); Pietro Colonna (1766), who took the last name Pamphili; and Nicola Colonna, 1785. He is also listed as Prospero II Colonna.

Education. Intial studies at home; later, he attended at La Sapienza University, Rome, where he obtained a dcotorate.

Early life. Protonotary apostolic, March 1692; later, dean of the College of Protonotaries. Referendary of the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace, June 26, 1694. Protonotary apostolic participantium, June 1694. Vice-legate in Ferrara, December 9, 1702. Vicar of the patriarcal Lateran basilica, December 22, 1700. Cleric of the Apostolic Chamber, May 1706; took possession on October 11, 1706. Governor of Castro, which was administer by the Apostolic Chamber, in 1707. Presidente delle Ripe, in 1711. President delle Acque on May 2, 1717. Governor of the Tower of Arnolfe, 1718; and of Cesi, January 1719. Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber, November 14, 1721.

Sacred orders. Received the diaconate on October 16, 1729.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon in the consistory of September 30, 1739; received the red hat and the deaconry of Ss. Angelo in Pescheria, November 16, 1739. Participated in the conclave of 1740, which elected Pope Benedict XIV.

Death. Monday March 4, 1743, near 9 p.m., of an apoplexy, Rome (1). Exposed in the basilica of Ss. XII Apostoli, Rome, where the capella papalis took place on March 6; in the afternoon, his body was transferred privately to the patriarchal Lateran basilica and buried in the chapel of his family, where is located the choir of winter of that basilica's chapter.

Seidler, Päpste und Kardinäle in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts (1730-1777), p. 247, says that he died in the morning of March 3, 1743, adding that when his assistant entered his chamber, he found the cardinal in the middle of the same, on the floor, without any signs of life. It says that the cardinal was seventy years, three months and fourteen days old.

(35) 2. SACRIPANTE, Carlo Maria (1689-1758)

Birth. September 11, 1689, Rome. Of a noble and patrician family originally from Narni. Eldest of the ten children of Filippo Sacripante, consistorial advocate, and Vincenza Maria Vituzzi, from Narni. Nephew of Cardinal Giuseppe Sacripante (1695). His last name is also listed as Sacripanti; and as Sagripanti.

Education. (No information found).

Early life. Coadjutor of his father as consistorial advocate. In 1714, after the death of his father in April of that year, he became fiscal advocate of the Roman Church. He was declared advocate of the Roman people in 1718. Referendary of the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace, 1718. Voter of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature of Justice, October 1718. Cleric of the Apostolic Chamber February 1721; as such, he was president delle Carceri; and later, in 1725, governor of Cesi. President delle Ripe, December 1729. Elected by the Sacred College of Cardinals in February 1730, during the vacant see, pro-treasurer general of the Apostolic Chamber; confirmed in the post by the new Pope Clement XII. In 1738 he published the new Raccolta, rinovazione, e dichiarazione dei bandi, ordini, e provvisioni in diversi tempi emanate sopra le dogane generali di Roma, collecting in one volume what until then had been confusing and scattered information and documentation concerning the Treasury; the work was approved by the pope by means of a chirograph.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon in the consistory of September 30, 1739. Granted dispensation to be a cardinal without having received the subdiaconate and diaconate, October 2, 1739. Received the red hat and the deaconry of S. Maria in Aquiro, November 16, 1739. Participated in the conclave of 1740, which elected Pope Benedict XIV. Opted for the deaconry of S. Maria in Portico Campitelli, May 29, 1741.

Sacred orders. Received the subdiaconate, May 13, 1742; and the diaconate, May 15, 1742. Opted for the deaconry of S. Maria ad Martyres, April 10, 1747.

Priesthood. Ordained, end of December 1750 or beginning of January 1751; celebrated his first mass on January 6, 1751 in his chapel (1). Opted for the order of priests and the title of S. Anastasia, February 1, 1751.

Episcopate. Opted for the order of bishops and the suburbicarian see of Frascati, January 12, 1756. Consecrated, January 25, 1756, Rome, by Cardinal Giovanni Antonio Guadagni, O.C.D., vicar of Rome. Pro-prefect of the S.C. of the Tridentine Council, January 1757, after the resignation of Cardinal Spinelli, also a pro-prefect, and before Cardinal Giovanni Giacomo Millo took possession as the new prefect. Participated in the conclave of 1758, which elected Pope Clement XIII. Unhappy with the election of the new pope, he retired to Narni, where he died shortly after.

Death. November 4, 1758, Narni. Exposed in the cathedral of Narni; and buried in his family's tomb in the chapel of Blessed Lucia da Narni, in that cathedral.
