Birth. September 25, 1725, Ferrara. Of a noble family. Third of the five children of Palatine Count Cesare Calcagnini, ninth marquis of Fusignano, and Caterina degli Obizzi, marchioness of the Holy Roman Empire. The other siblings were Francesco, Tommaso, Teresa and Placido. Relative of Cardinal Carlo Leopoldo Calcagnini (1743).

Education. Studied at Collegio dei Nobili di S. Carlo, Modena, from 1737; and later, at La Sapienza University, Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in theology and in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, on May 15, 1747.

Early life. Privy chamberlain of His Holiness, 1746. He established himself in Rome and entered the service of the Curia. Referendary of the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace, August 1749. Domestic prelate of His Holiness, 1749. Coadjutor of Consistorial Advocate Montecatini, ca. 1751. Relator of the SS.CC. of the Ecclesiastical Immunity, 1751; and of Good Government, November 1752. Voter of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature of Justice, September 1759. Canon and vicar capitular of S. Maria in Trastevere, Rome, September 1756. Consistorial advocate, 1758. Residential ambassador ad interim of Ferrara in Rome, June 1758 until December 1764. Voter of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature of Justice, 1759. Relator for the relations ad limina nella of the newly constituted particular congregation "super statu ecclesiarum". Received the subdiaconate on November 11, 1764; and the diaconate on November 30, 1764.

Priesthood. Ordained, December 21, 1764.

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Tarso, February 4, 1765. Consecrated, February 10, 1765, Rome, by Pope Clement XIII. Named nuncio in Naples, February 22, 1765; he left for Naples the following June. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, February 24, 1765. Prior commendatario of S. Romano, Ferrara, January 1769. Prefect of the Papal Household, April 8, 1775.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of May 20, 1776; received the red hat on May 23, 1776; and the title of S. Maria in Traspontina, July 15, 1776. He was assigned to the SS.CC. of Bishops and Regulars, Ecclesiastical Immunity, Ceremonial and Indulgences and Relics. Transferred to the see of Osimo e Cingoli, with personal title of archbishop, May 20, 1776; he made his solemn entrance in the diocese in the following August 14. Celebrated a diocesan synod in September 1778 (1). Participated in the conclave of 1799-1800, which elected Pope Pius VII.

Death. August 27, 1807, Osimo. Exposed and buried in the cathedral of Osimo (2) (3).

Birth. May 24, 1725, Milan (1). Of the family of the counts of Monza. Second of the two children of Giuseppe Durini and Costanza Barbavara. The other child was Carlo. Nephew of Cardinal Carlo Francesco Durini (1753).

Education. Studied at Collegio Romano, Rome; and later, at La Sapienza University, Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, on June 9, 1757.

Early life. Entered the ecclesiastical state and returned to Rome to serve in the Roman Curia. Accompanied his uncle to his nunciature in Paris in 1744, remaining there until 1754; returned to Paris in May 1756 as ablegato apostolic to bring the red biretta to his uncle, returning in February 1757. Referendary of the Supreme Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace, September 1757. Internuncio in France. Inquisitor in Malta, December 1759 for seven years. Abbot commendatario of S. Bassano, Lodi, June 1765 of S. Abbondio, Como, January 1769; and of S. Dionigi, Milan, April 1776.

Priesthood. Ordained, December 20, 1766.

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Ancira, December 22, 1766. Consecrated, December 28, 1766, at the Quirinale Palace, Rome, by Pope Clement XIII, assisted by Scipione Borghese, titular archbishop Teodosia, and by Ignazio Reali, titular archbishop of Atena. In the same ceremony was consecrated Francesco Saverio de Zelada, titular archbishop of Petra in Palestina, future cardinal. Nuncio in Poland, January 16, 1767. First president and deputy of the legation of Avignon and of the Comtat Venaissin, January 22, 1774.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of May 20, 1776; with an apostolic brief dated June 5, 1776, the pope sent him the red biretta with Marquis Francesco Brivio, ablegato apostolic, named privy chamberlain in abito paonazzo for the occasion; he retired to private life and never went to Rome to receive the red hat and the title; he was not assigned to any curial congregation. In 1782, when Pope Pius VI traveled to Vienna, Cardinal Durini went to Bologna to greet him and formed part of the papal retinue with other cardinals in several cities of the region.

Death. April 28, 1796, in his villa of Balbiano (now villa Arconati, in Comune di Lemno), near Lake Como. Buried in the basilica of Sant'Abbondio, Como (2).
