(15) 1. ILUNDAIN Y ESTEBAN, Eustaquio
(1862-1937)

Birth. September 20, 1862, Pamplona, Spain. Son of Juan Cruz Ilundáin y Unciti, from Astráin, and Rafaela Esteban Vélez, from Miranda. Nephew of Pedro María Ilundáin y Oyaregui (1817-1902), archdeacon of Pamplona.

Education. Studied at the Seminary of Pamplona; and at the Seminary of Ciudad Real.

Priesthood. Ordained, 1886, Pamplona. Faculty member of the Seminary of Pamplona, 1886-1891. Canon schoolmaster of the cathedral chapter of Ciudad Real, 1891-1901. Rector of the Seminary of Segovia, 1901-1904.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Orense, November 14, 1904. Consecrated, March 13, 1905, chapel of the Virgen del Camino, parish church of San Saturnino, Pamplona, by José Cadena Eleta, bishop of Vitoria; assisted by José López Mendoza y García, O.S.A., bishop of Pamplona, and by José Marí Salvador y Barrera, bishop of Tarazona. Senator of the Spanish Kingdom by the province of Santiago de Compostela. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Sevilla, December 16, 1920.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of March 30, 1925; received the red hat and the title of S. Lorenzo in Panisperna, December 17, 1925. Papal legate to the Spanish-American Marian Congress, Sevilla, May 13, 1929.

Death. August 10, 1937, at the archiepiscopal palace of Sevilla, from bronchial pneumonia, which had left him confined to bed for a fortnight. Buried in the metropolitan cathedral of Sevilla.

(16) 2. CASANOVA Y MARZOL, Vicente
(1854-1930)

Birth. April 16, 1854, Borja, diocese of Tarazona, Spain. Son of Nicolás Casanova Miguel and Clara Marzol Foncillas, from a well-to-do family.

Education. Studied at the Seminary of Zaragoza; and at the Seminary of Madrid; later, he obtained a licentiate in theology in Valencia in 1882.

Priesthood. Ordained, 1881. Pastor in Maluenda and Alfaro, diocese of Tarazona. For many years, pastor of the parish of Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo, Madrid.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Almería, December 19, 1907. Consecrated, March 25, 1908, cathedral of San Isidro, Madrid, by Antonio Vico, titular archbishop of Filippi, nuncio in Spain, assisted by José María Salvador y Barrera, bishop of Madrid, and by Julián de Diego y Alcolea, bishop of Astorga. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Granada, March 7, 1925.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of March 30, 1925; received the red hat and the title of Ss. Vitale, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio, December 17, 1925.

Death. October 23, 1930, Zaragoza, unexpectedly, while he was attending the Second National Catechetical Congress. Buried in the metropolitan cathedral of Granada (1).
