Cardinalate. Deacon cardinalis of the Holy Roman Church in 820. Named archdeacon cardinalis of the Holy Roman Church by Pope Paschal I. He was celebrated for his great piety and spirituality. When Pope Eugenius II died, the Roman clergy, nobility and people went to the basilica of S. Maria Maggiore, where Cardinal Valentino was in prayer, and unanimously elected him pope despite his protestation that he was undeserving and totally inexperienced, and carried him in triumph to the Lateran palace and sat him on the papal throne.

Papacy. Elected pope in August 827. Took the name Valentine. Received the confirmation of Emperor Lothair II and took the oath of loyalty to the empire. Consecrated in the Vatican basilica. It is not known if the imperial envoys arrived in Rome for the pope's consecration as required by the Constitutio Romana of 824.

Death. September 827, of corpus oppressus molestia (bodily trouble), Rome. Buried in the Vatican basilica. His tomb was destroyed during the demolition of the old basilica and the construction of the new one in the 16th and 17th centuries.
