Birth. (No date found), Lorraine, France. Son of Count Gozlin d'Ardenne and his wife, Uda. He is also listed as Adalbero d'Ardenne; as Adalbero of Ardennes; as Adalbero of Reims; as Adalbiron d'Aardenne; and as Adalbéron de Reims; and his first name as Adalbero and as Adalbéron only.

Education. Entered the Order of Saint Benedict (Benedictines).

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Abbot of the monastery of Gorze in Lorrained.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Reims in 969, due to the influence of Emperor Otto I, the Great (936-973), to whom he was very loyal; as well as to his son, Otto II (973-983); and his grandson, Otto III (983 to 1002). Consecrated (no information found). He was chancellor of France and a minister under Kings of France Lothar (954-986); Louis V (986/987); and Hugh Capet (987-996). He consecrated Kings Louis V and Hugues Capet.

Cardinalate. Presbyter cardinalis of an unknown title or deacon cardinalis of the Holy Roman Church at an unknown date between 985 and 996 (1).
