Note. Cristofori indicates that the cardinal deacons started signing papal documents with the names of their respectives deaconries towards the end of 1088. Therefore, the chronology of the eighteen original deaconries does not start until the end of the 11th Century. The leading sources for the Centuries 11th and 12th are Cristofori and Annuaire Pontifical Catholique. For Centuries 13th to 19th, Hierarchia Catholica. Vacancies of more than three years are noted in the chronology of the titles' occupants from 1431 to 2002.
In alphabetizing the names of the deaconries, Sacro, S. (San), Ss. (Santi) and SS. (Santissimo) have been disregarded and a continuous sequence has been followed.
