Bibliographic items added to the site - January to March 2015
Following are the books and articles added to the general bibliography and/or the individual biographical entries between the months of January to March 2015.
- Allen, John L. The Francis miracle : inside the transformation of the Pope and the Church. Des Moines, Iowa : Time Books, 2015. Contents: Bergoglio's roots -- Moderate to an extreme -- Dialogue and peace -- God and Mammon -- Women and the Church -- The social gospel -- The abuse scandals -- The paradox of power -- Backlash -- Will it last? Abstract: There is no other organization whose inner workings are more secretive than the Vatican. Now, with a dynamic new leader in Pope Francis, all eyes are upon him as he seeks to bring the church back from the right to center, blurring the lines between politics, religion and culture. Allen reveals the inner workings of the Vatican to display the vast machinery of the Catholic Church, and an examination of the man at the helm.
- Allen, William. A true, sincere and modest defence of English Catholics that suffer for their faith both at home and abroad, against a false, seditious and slanderous libel, entitled: "The execution of justice in England" . 2 vols. Responsibility: by William Allen ; with a preface by His Eminence the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminister.
- Alvarez, David J. ; Graham, Robert A. Nothing sacred : Nazi espionage against the Vatican, 1939-1945. London ; Portland, OR : F. Cass, 1997. (Cass series--studies in intelligence). Abstract: Nothing Sacred is the first book to document the Nazi espionage campaign against the Vatican in the Second World War. Nazi Germany considered the Catholic Church to be a serious threat to its domestic security and its international ambitions. In Germany, Hitler's agents recruited informants to provide intelligence on Church finances, and on the political views and activities of bishops, priests and lay Catholics. In Rome, however, German attempts to penetrate the Papacy were less successful, with the efforts of the local Gestapo office proving largely futile. The German codebreaking operation on the other hand was more successful: the Nazis systematically intercepted, decoded and read secret communications between the Pope and his representatives worldwide. Written by two leading authorities on Vatican history, this work will prove fascinating reading for those interested in Second World War history, intelligence studies and the history of the Catholic Church.

Christmas Day, 800 ; 'The centre cannot hold' -- Second Coming. Charles the Great and Leo the Pope ; Habemus papam : papal lift-off -- The godfather (part 3). Abstract: "In 476 AD, the last of Rome's emperors, known as "Augustulus" was deposed by a barbarian general, the son of one of Attila the Hun's henchmen. With the imperial vestments dispatched to Constantinople, the curtain fell on the Roman empire in Western Europe, its territories divided among successor kingdoms constructed around barbarian military manpower. But, if the Roman Empire was dead, Romans across the old empire still lived, holding on to their lands, the values of their civilization, and their institutions. The conquering barbarians, witnessing the continuing psychological dominance of Rome, were ready to reignite the imperial flame and enjoy the benefits of its civilization. As Peter Heather shows in dazzling biographical portraits, each of the three greatest contenders--Theoderic, Justinian, and Charlemagne--operated with a different power base but was astonishingly successful in his own way. Though each in turn managed to put back together enough of the old Roman West to stake a plausible claim to the Western imperial title, none of their empires long outlived their founders' deaths. Not until the reinvention of the papacy in the eleventh century would Europe's barbarians find the means to establish a new Roman Empire, one that has lasted a thousand years"

- Levillain, Philippe.

Armand Jamme (dir.). Roma: Ècole française de Rome, 2014. (Sources et documents 3). Description:
