- Entering a Clerical Career at the Roman Curia, 1458-1471. Edited by Kirsi Salonen and Jussi Hanska. Farnham, Surrey, UK, and Burlington, VT : Ashgate, 2013.. (Faith and Culture in the Medieval West). Description: Building on recent revisionist histories of the quality and ability of the late medieval clergy, this is a comprehensive survey of the ordinations of priests at the Roman curia during the pontificates of Pius II (1458-1464) and Paul II (1464-1471). This period has often been presented as one of stasis within the Catholic Church, falling between the conciliar movement of the first half of the fifteenth century and the Protestant Reformation and counter-reformation of the sixteenth century. However the authors argue that this period was one of gradual reform, whereby the Church attempted to define and control the quality of the clergy. The study analyses archival documentation to reconstruct exactly how young men entered a clerical career, and also what influence practices at the curia had on wider clerical ordinations. The book concentrates especially on the role of the Apostolic Penitentiary in controlling the quality of priest candidates and on the role of Camera Apostolica in carrying out ecclesiastical ordinations in the papal curia. In considering the rules of who could enter the clerical career, and also why and how these rules might be circumvented, this book sheds new light on the late medieval clergy.
- Filoni, Fernando. La Chiesa in Iraq. Storia. sviluppo e missione, dagli inizi ai nostri giorni. Vatican City : Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 2015.

- Gitman, Esther. Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac of Zagreb and the Rescue of Jews, 1941-45. Abstract: During World War II, Blessed Alojzije (Aloysius) Stepinac, archbishop and later cardinal of Zagreb (1898-1960), took action to rescue several hundred individuals associated with Croatia's Jewish community, more than 1000 Jews in mixed marriages, and a number of others in danger from the Nazis. Using archival evidence, survivor testimonies, and other documentation, the author discusses how Stepinac reacted to the policies of the Nazi- and fascist-sponsored Ustaše regime and used his position in the Church to promote the rescue of Jews, supported by his moral convictions and Giuseppe Ramiro Marcone, Benedictine abbot and Pope Pius XII's apostolic visitor to Croatia.
- Korten, Christopher. Against the Grain: Pope Gregory XVI's Optimism Toward Russia in His Censure of Polish Clerics in 1831. Abstract: Pope Gregory XVI (1831-46) was an experienced church diplomat in Russian affairs when he agreed to assist the Russian government in quelling the Polish uprising of 1830-31, a revolt that involved not a few prominent Polish clergy. Impensa Caritas (February 1831) admonished clergy to remain devoted to their spiritual duties, to refrain from revolutionary activity, and to obey legitimate authority. The pope's decision to cooperate resulted from a series of positive collaborations that began in 1825, most notably with the Armenian Church. Meanwhile, Russia's request for assistance was made in good faith by Prince Grigory Gagarin, the Russian envoy, to quell the Polish revolt.

- Whalen, Brett Edward. The Medieval Papacy. New York : Palgrave, 2014. (European History in Perspective). Description: During the Middle Ages, the popes of Rome claimed both spiritual authority and worldly powers, vying with emperors for supremacy, ruling over the Papal States, and legislating the norms of Christian society. They also faced profound challenges to their proclaimed primacy over Christendom. The Medieval Papacy explores the unique role that the Roman Church and its papal leadership played in the historical development of medieval Europe. Brett Edward Whalen pays special attention to the religious, intellectual and political significance of the papacy from the first century through to the Reformation in the sixteenth century. Ideal for students, scholars and general readers alike, this approachable survey helps us to understand the origins of an idea and institution that continue to shape our modern world.
