- Borromeo, Federico ; Rothwell, Kenneth Sprague ; Jones, Pamela M. Sacred painting : Museum. Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 2010. (I Tatti
Renaissance library, 44). Summary: Federico Borromeo, Cardinal-Archbishop of Milan (1564-1631), is well known as a leading Catholic reformer and as the founder of the Ambrosiana library, art collection, and
academy in that city. Less known is the fact that the institution's art museum was the culmination of many decades of reflection on the aesthetic qualities and religious roles of art,
Borromeo recorded his reflections in two treatises. De pictura sacra (Sacred Painting, 1624) laid out the rules that artists should follow when creating religious art. Borromeo touched
on dozens of icono-graphical issues and in so doing drew on his deep knowledge not only of church fathers, councils, and scripture but also of classical art and literature. In Musaeum
(1625) Borromeo showed a less doctrinaire and more personal side by walking the reader through the Ambrosiana and commenting on specific works in his collection. He offered some of the
earliest and most important critiques to survive on works by artists such as Leonardo, Titian, and Jan Brueghel the Elder. This volume offers, for the first time, translations of the
treatises directly into English as well as freshly edited Latin texts, an introduction, extensive notes, and an appendix on the Academy of Design that was established in conjunction
with the museum. These treatises will be of great interest to students of the history of art, museums, and religion. The I Tatti Renaissance Library is the only series that makes
available to a broad readership the major literary, historical, philosophical, and scientific works of the Italian Renaissance written in Latin, Each volume provides a reliable Latin
text together with an accurate, readable English translation of facing pages, accompanied by an editor's introduction, notes on the text, brief bibliography, and index. Presenting
current scholarship in an attractive and convenient format, The I Tatti Renaissance Library aims to make this essential literature accessible to students and scholars in a wide variety
of disciplines as well as to general readers.--Jacket.

- Carroll, Stuart. Martyrs and Murderers: the Guise Family and the Making of Europe. Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2011. Description: Martyrs and
Murderers tells the story of three generations of treacherous, bloodthirsty power-brokers. One of the richest and most powerful families in sixteenth-century France, the House of Guise
played a pivotal role in the history of Europe. Among the staunchest opponents of the Reformation, they whipped up religious bigotry throughout France. They overthrew the king, ruled
Scotland for nearly 20 years through Mary Queen of Scots, plotted to invade England and overthrow Elizabeth I, and ended the century by unleashing the bloody Wars of Religion, before
succumbing in a counter-revolution that made them martyrs for the Catholic cause. The story of the Guise family is sensational but true. Though parts of the story are familiar--such as
their crucial role in the murder of 4,000 Protestants in the infamous Massacre of Saint Bartholomew--the full scope of their influence has never been told before. Stuart Carroll
unravels the legends about this cultivated, charismatic, and violent dynasty, and challenges traditional assumptions about one of Europe's most turbulent eras.

influence-peddling.
- Cornati, Dario. L' amore che tutto compie. Verità e giustizia di agape in Hans Urs Von Balthasar. Città del Vaticano : Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 2018.
(Collana Orizzonti, 2). Description: «L’amore è tutt’altro che cieco. Ci vede benissimo».

- Eisner, Peter. The Pope's last crusade : how an American Jesuit helped Pope Pius XI's campaign to stop Hitler. New York, NY : William Morrow, An Imprint of

virtually unknown American Jesuit, to craft a papal encyclical (Humani generis unitas, which was never promulgated) condemning Hitler's campaign against the Jews.
- Fletcher, Stella. The Popes and Britain : a history of rule, rupture and reconciliation. London I.B. Tauris 2017. Description: When the British thought of
themselves as a Protestant nation their natural enemy was the pope and they adapted their view of history accordingly. In contrast, Rome's perspective was always considerably wider and
its view of Britain was almost invariably positive, especially in comparison to medieval emperors, who made and unmade popes, and post-medieval Frenchmen, who treated popes with
contempt. As the twenty-first-century papacy looks ever more firmly beyond Europe, this new history examines political, diplomatic and cultural relations between the popes and Britain
from their vague origins, through papal overlordship of England, the Reformation and the process of repairing that breach.

- Gallagher, Charles R. Vatican secret diplomacy : Joseph P. Hurley and Pope Pius XII. New Haven : Yale University Press, ©2008. Summary: In the corridors of
the Vatican on the eve of World War II, American Catholic priest Joseph Patrick Hurley found himself in the midst of secret diplomatic dealings and intense debate. Hurley's deeply
felt American patriotism and fixed ideas about confronting Nazism directly led to a mighty clash with Pope Pius XII. It was 1939,the earliest days of Pius's papacy, and controversy
within the Vatican over policy toward Nazi Germany was already heated. This groundbreaking book is both a biography of Joseph Hurley, the first American to achieve the rank of nuncio,
or Vatican ambassador, and an insider's view of the alleged silence of the pope on the Holocaust and Nazism. Drawing on Hurley's unpublished archives, the book documents critical
debates in Pope Pius's Vatican, secret U.S. Vatican dealings, the influence of Detroit's flamboyant antisemitic priest Charles E. Coughlin, and the controversial case of Croatia's
Cardinal Stepinac. The book also sheds light on the powerful connections between religion and politics in the twentieth century.--Book Jacket.

- John XXIII. Io amo l' Italia. Esperienza militare di un Papa. Studi e documenti. A cura di Goffredo Zanchi and Alessandro Angelo Persico.
Città del Vaticano : Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 2017. Description: 1918-2018.
Mai come allora sentimmo quale

- Pierce, Hazel. The life, career and political significance of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury 1473-1541. PhD thesis, Prifysgol Bangor University,
2016. Abstract: This thesis conducts a biographical study of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury. Born in 1473, she was the daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, and niece of both
Edward IV and Richard III. In 1541, at the age of 67, she was executed on the command of Henry VIII. Margaret's ancestry is detailed and her experiences under Edward IV and Richard III
are noted. A study of her marriage is made which reveals the dynastic fears of Henry VII, while an understanding of the lineage and career of Margaret's husband, Sir Richard Pole,
illustrates the importance that Henry VII attached to his half blood relatives. Margaret's restoration to the Earldom of Salisbury in 1512 is examined and the lands to which she was
restored are specified. The change in lifestyle enjoyed by Margaret and her children is considered and the marriages of her three sons and daughter, evaluated. Margaret's rare status
as a peeress in her own right is explored. Her position as head of her family, as an independent member of the aristocracy, as 'good lord' and employer is analysed, the members of her
affinity detailed and the role of her eldest son, Lord Montague, explained. The fall of the Pole family is investigated, which reveals that Henry Vill's action against them was not as
unreasonable as some historians have maintained. The family's activities and the evidence against them is examined, while the relationship between Henry VIII and the Pole family is
discussed. The significance of the international situation and extent and location of Margaret's lands is also highlighted. The thesis ends with an account of the countess's execution,
and a brief note concerning the fate of those family members who survived the executions of 1538 and 1541.

- Ros, Carlos. Description: "El mito Segura perdura aún después de
- Seward, Desmond. The burning of the vanities : Savonarola and the Borgia Pope. Stroud : Sutton, 2006. Summary: In the 1490s, Girolamo Savonarola, a visionary
friar, dominated Renaissance Florence, terrifying the city with his uncannily accurate prophecies. Best remembered for his 'burning of the vanities' - the destruction of 'profane art'
in public bonfires - Savonarola has often been caricatured as a hell-fire fanatic. Yet Victorian England saw him as an Italian Martin Luther, while his career inspired George Eliot's
novel, Romola. Acclaimed author Desmond Seward casts new light on this controversial and contradictory figure. Savonarola prophesied the French invasion of Italy with alarming
precision, and foretold the deaths of Lorenzo the Magnificent and Pope Innocent VIII. Yet there was more to him than prophecies of doom. He restored republican government to Florence
and many of its citizens - including Michelangelo and Machiavelli - remained convinced that no better Italian government had ever existed. Savonarola's undoing was his denunciation
and attempt to depose of the Borgia Alexander VI, one of the most corrupt popes in history. Had he succeeded, the Reformation might have been avoided. But in the end Alexander turned
the Florentines against Savonarola and destroyed him. They stormed his friary and, after a mockery of a trial during which he was tortured by the strappado and condemned as a heretic,
he was hanged and burned in chains. In this wide-ranging biography Desmond Seward portrays Savonarola as a surprisingly human figure. Exploring Savonarola's early years in Ferrara,
his birthplace, Seward highlights the fact that an outsider had such an impact on Florence. He draws on Philippe de Commine's memoirs to analyse Savonarola's attitude towards the
French invaders, examines Savonarola's eerie ability to see into the future, and looks at what really perished in the 'burning of the vanities'. Dramatic, colourful and compelling,
The Burning of the Vanities brings to life an extraordinary man whose story is one of the great Renaissance tragedies.--Jacket.

most important members included Pope Paul III and Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, and the titles of Duke of Parma and Piacenza and of Castro were held by various members of the family. A
number of important architectural works and antiquities are associated with the Farnese family, either through construction or acquisition. Buildings include the Palazzo Farnese in

- Somerville, Robert. Pope Urban II's Council of Piacenza. Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2011. Description: The Council of Piacenza is among the most important papal
synods of the Reform that was sweeping through the Western Church at the end of the eleventh century. Piacenza may receive a line or two in textbooks of medieval history due to a
connection with the First Crusade, but if the assembly was a Crusade launching pad - and the matter is obscure - this is a footnote to its true significance. The council marked a
turning point in the papal schism between Popes Gregory VII/Urban II and the so-called anti-pope Clement III, who was created and sustained by Emperor Henry IV. Urban’s earlier synods
anticipated the rulings from Piacenza, and the canons promulgated at Piacenza became landmarks not only for the eleventh-/twelfth-century Reform but more broadly for the Church of the
High Middle Ages and even beyond (see below). No accurate figures exist for attendance, but many churchmen from Italy and beyond responded to the papal call for a “general council”
early in the year 1095 to deal with issues arising from the schism, and in essence to formulate a revised Reform ecclesiology. Piacenza would have both reaffirmed the provisions from
Urban’s earlier synods and issued new decrees. The latter included canons about ordinations by simoniacs and the schismatics, in addition to statements about the use and the limits of
mercy for those returning to Urban’s obedience. The official acts are lost, but the decrees survive in many similar twelfth-century copies that can be grouped into a few distinct
versions. Identifying “the canons of Piacenza” is thus not a simple process, but important ideas occurring in the council reappear in other texts of Pope Urban, and also are found in
the widespread Prologue on the hermeneutics of legal texts formulated by Bishop Ivo of Chartres. Piacenza also attracted skeptics and detractors. The debates that occurred therein are
in great part lost from view, but tantalizing hints survive, e.g., in the well-known Chronicion of Bernold of Constance, in the little known Gesta Romanae ecclesiae contra Hildebrandum
penned by the schismatic Cardinal-priest Beno of SS. Martino e Silvestro, and in a protocol accompanying several versions of the canons. But notwithstanding critics, inclusion of
decrees from Piacenza in Gratian’s Decretum ensured their visibility throughout the High Middle Ages and on into modern times, for Gratian’s work became part of the living tradition of
the Church’s Corpus iuris canonici. In addition to a new perspective on the “fortuna” of these canons and a new edition, this book includes a commentary on those texts akin to what was
done in the author’s book on Urban II’s Council of Melfi. The last chapter, finally, discusses the legislation of Urban’s synods after Piacenza. That transmission is complicated and
episodic, but the canons of Urban’s last council, held at St. Peter’s in Rome at Eastertime of 1099, duplicate a large number of decrees from Piacenza.

Budapest : Gondolat, 2012. (Bibliotheca Historiae Ecclesiasticae Universitatis Catholicae de Petro Pázmány Nuncupatae : Series 1, Collectanea Vaticana Hungariae : Classis 2, 4).
Description: The volume that was written in English language presents the relationship of the Apostolic See and the Hungarian Kingdom in
the 15–16th century in the light of the documents of the consistory, the most important cultural institute of the age. In the examined period of time the most significant advisory and
decision making body of the pope was the consistory. A good portion of its documents were preserved in the Vatican Secret Archives (Archivio Segreto Vaticano). The first part of the
book enumerates the history of the consistory and its complex operation, the filling of the consistorial benefices, the not easy process of the canonical examination of bishop-nominees,
the course of business of the consistory and the subsequent issue of bulls. The second part of the work as the title of the volume also shows deals with the relations of the consistory
and Hungary in the 15–16th century. It can be read in it about the presence of the Hungarian affairs on the agenda of the consistories and the filling of Hungarian ecclesiastical
benefices. Besides it devotes many pages to the history of the ecclesiastical benefices before the battle of Mohács and in connection with it to the history of the Hungarian royal
patronage and supremacy, furthermore, to the nature of the changes of the relations of Rome and the Hungarian church after the Battle of Mohács. All these are completed by rich note
apparatus of Hungarian and foreign literature. The content is demonstrated well by the twenty-one original Latin sources with English abstracts, the maps of the same good quality as
the former volumes, and the six black and white photos that illustrate the sources. In the volume the work of the researchers is aided by an Index and a Hungarian Resume at the end of
it.
- White, John H. ; Kennedy, Eugene C. This man Bernardin. Chicago : Loyola Press, ©1996. Summary: This Man Bernardin is the visual diary of one of our nation's
foremost religious leaders - Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, the Archbishop of Chicago. The 180 striking black-and-white photos featured in this book capture the essence of the man who is
Bernardin. Journey with the Cardinal from his Depression-era childhood in South Carolina to his present position as spiritual leader of the second-largest Catholic diocese in America
- serving over 2.3 million parishioners. Given unprecedented access to the Cardinal's daily life, Pulitzer-Prize-winning photojournalist John H. White takes you beyond the normal
barriers and into the private life of a very public man. Bernardin's own words - collected from pastoral letters, homilies, personal interviews, and other writings - have been chosen
to frame White's stunning duotone photographs. White and Bernardin first met in New York City in 1979, when White was assigned to cover Pope John Paul II's visit to the United States.
A special friendship grew between White, an African-American photojournalist and son of a Protestant minister, and Bernardin, then the Archbishop of Cincinnati and son of Italian
immigrants. With Bernardin's trust, White has been able to observe and record the life of an American cardinal as no other photographer before him.--Jacket.
