Summary: This publication is divided into five main sections and an introduction. The introduction of Cardinal Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo, the designer of the lay out of the coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI, is followed with a study on papal titles and their usage, written by Professor Frantiek X. Halas, historian and the first Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Holy See.
The first section The Development of Papal Coats of Arms consists of twenty three chapters, it enables the author to follow the development of pre-heraldic symbolism from the beginning of ecclesiastical art and to trace the development of individual parts of papal coats of arms up to the present. The author observes the development of the papal coats of arms in the whole of their complexity, form richness and composition variations. The basic propositions of the text are commented and completed by legends to the numerous illustrations.
The second section Collection of Arms shows papal coats of arms on architecture, coins and also brings individual collections of arms.
The third, most representative section Popes4Coats of Arms brings one hundred coloured drawings of papal coats of arms from Innocent III to the present Pontiff Benedict XVI (different versions are included, if two forms of the coats of arms were used by the pope). The introductory part summarizes up sources needed to acquire information on the papal coats of arms from their occurrence on architecture or art, to their variations on coins or to the development of armorials from the Middle Ages up to the contemporary literature.
In the fourth section Context, the author gives a definition of heraldry and explains its beginnings. He marks that the Church did not adopted heraldry with a delay, as it is sometimes said, but on the contrary the Church is counted among its sources from the very beginning of heraldry. He brings back to memory that some emblems had been used similar as coats of arms but long before the introduction of heraldry. Using a great amount of images, he shows that the most important and widespread of these pre-heraldic symbols was a cross. He also names officials and institutions which used and still use separate elements of the papal coats of arms, their surroundings parts, charges or the whole shields or complete achievements. He supports his states with illustrations of coats of arms originated from different countries. He covers a long time period and also explains some details more thoroughly to show different possibilities of secondary occurrence of originally papal symbols.
In the last section Appendix, the author brings a collection of pre-heraldic (attributed) papal coats of arms from St. Peter to Celestine III, he adds examples of their personal symbols on coins or other artefacts from the pre-heraldic period. In the introductory part, he explains this term, distinguishes individual categories of these coats of arms and summes up their occurrence and importance.
The book is accompanied with 100 coloured and 1700 black and white original illustrations, which are not copies of older works but their paraphrases. They enable to identify the images with concrete monuments or with the individual realisation of the coat of arms, but they are also the original author4s drawings.

- Nowakowska, Natalia. Church State and Dynasty in Renaissance Poland: The Career of Cardinal-Prince Fryderyk Jagiellon (1468-1503). Surrey, UK : Ashgate Publishing, Limited, 2007. Synopsis: This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the career of Fryderyk Jagiellon (1468-1503) arguably the most powerful churchman in medieval or early modern Central Europe. Royal prince, bishop of Kraków, Polish primate, cardinal, regent and brother to the rulers of Hungary, Poland, Bohemia and Lithuania, Fryderyk was a leading dynastic politician, diplomat, ecclesiastic and cultural patron, and a pivotal figure in three Polish royal governments. Whereas Polish historians have traditionally cast Fryderyk as a miscreant and national embarrassment, this study argues that he is in fact a figure of fundamental importance for our understanding of church and monarchy in the Renaissance, who can enhance our grasp of the period in a variety of ways. Jagiellon's career constitutes an ambitious state-building programme - executed in the three spheres of government, ecclesiastical governance and cultural patronage - which reveals the multi-dimensional ways in which Renaissance monarchies might exploit the local church to their own ends. This book also offers a rare English language insight into the development of the Reformation in central Europe, and an analysis of the reigns of Kazimierz IV (1447-92), Jan Olbracht (1492-1501), Aleksander (1501-6), Poland's evolving constitution, her foreign policy, Jagiellonian dynastic strategy and, above all, the tripartite relationship between church, Crown and state.
