Pope Victor II (1055-1057)
Consistory of 1057 (II)

(3) 1. BENEDETTO (?-after April 1060)

Birth. (No date or place found).

Education. (No information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal bishop of Velletri before May 13, 1057. He subscribed the papal bull "Convenit apostolico moderamini" issued by Pope Victor II on May 13, 1057 confirming the possessions, freedoms and privileges of the monastery of St. Bertin in Omer, at the request of its Abbot Bovone. In August 1057, he was one of the persons proposed as a candidate to succeed Pope Victor II. He subscribed the papal bull "Si erga fidelium" issued by Pope Stephen IX (X) on October 18, 1057 confirming the privileges of the clergy of the diocese of Lucca. At the death of Pope Stephen IX (X), he supported those who wanted to restore the dependency of the papacy on the nobility. As this attempt had failed, Cardinal Benedetto lost his diocese at the Synod of April 1060; the see was then referred to Cardinal Pietro Damiano, O.S.B.Cam., bishop of Ostia (1). From then on, the sees of Velletri and Ostia remained united "ad hoc" until 1150, when Pope Eugenius II united them officially. The initial union of the sees resulted in a gap in the number of cardinal bishops -seven-, which was soon closed with the inclusion of the diocese of Sabina.

Death. After April 1060, (no place found). Buried (no information found).
