Early life. Founder of the priorate of Autrey.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Metz in January 1120; occupied the see until his death. Consecrated (no information found). He received the privilege of using the pallium in 1120.

Birth. Ca. 1075, Melgueil (now Mauguio), Languedoc, France. Of the counts of Marguliès, Auvergne and Toulouse. Second child of Pierre I de Melgueil and Almodis de Toulouse. Nephew of Pope Paschal II. His first name is also listed as Ponzio; as Ponce; and as Pontius; and his last name as Margogliensi; as Mergueil; and as Marguliès.

Education. Joined the Order of Saint Benedict (Benedictines) at Cluny.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). He was a monk at the Cluniac monastery of Saint-Pons-de-Thomières. Seventh abbot of the monastery of Cluny, May 9, 1109 until 1122. Pope Gelasius II died in 1119 in the monastery of Cluny, in which he had sought refuge from the supporters of Antipope Gregory VIII. Before he died, the pope had indicated that either Guy, archbishop of Vienne, or Pons of Cluny should succeed him as pontiff; Guy was elected at Cluny by six cardinals, and took the name Callistus II; Abbot Pons neither supported nor condemned his election; supported by several French bishops, he proposed that the election be subject to confirmation by the cardinals who were in Rome and people of the city; Pope Callistus II's election was duly confirmed by the cardinals who were in Rome. A period of difficult relations between the new pope and the abbot followed. But Pope Callistus II was back in Cluny for the canonization of Abbot Hugh in December and January 1120, and he took the opportunity to heal the breach with Abbot Pons and to declare his continuing support for Cluny. The pontiff also promoted the abbot to the cardinalate.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon the consistory of January 1120; his deaconry is not known (1). The financial difficulties that affected the monastery of Cluny, and the abbot's difficult personality, made the monks complain to Rome accusing him of violent and extravagant conduct and carelessly wasting the monastery's resources. In 1122, Pope Callistus II called him to Rome to attend the First Ecumenical Lateran Council and the abbot resigned his post. He then went to Jerusalem and a year later, returned to Italy and founded a small monastery near Vicenza. In that same year, he participated in the Diet of Worms. In 1126, Cardinal Pons returned to Cluny and by force reclaimed his abbatial miter; he was supported by numerous monks of the abbey, by the nobility of the region and by other monasteries of the order; the rebelious abbot was excommunicated by the archbishop of Lyon; the sentence was confirmed by Pope Honorius II. Pons was transferred to Lyon, and later, confined in Rome. He refused to recant his errors and sins sins and said that he was answerable only to Saint Peter in heaven, becoming also a schismatic; he was deposed from all ecclesiastical honors and privileges, and died soon.

Death. December 28, 1125 or December 29, 1126, of malaria (or Roman fever "Romanus ille pestifer morbus"), turre Septem Salas, Rome. Buried quasi pauper apud S. Andream, Rome; the pope wrote to Abbot Pierre le Vénérable telling him that in spite of the impenitent death of Pons, he had buried honorably out of respect for the monastery of Cluny. Later, at the request of Abbot Pierre le Vénérable, his remains were transferred to Cluny, where his tomb represents him with the feet bound, a hand cut and his staff broken (2).

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Brindisi in 1118 (1). He is mentioned, as Baialard de Brindisi, among the bishops who were present at the consecration of Pope Gelasius II in Gaeta on March 10, 1118 (2).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon probably in 1120; his deaconry is not known. In the privilege issued by Pope Callistus II for Archbishop Bisantius of Trani on November 6, 1120, he appears as supplicant for the archbishop. Received the episcopal consecration from Pope Callistus II; on February 22, 1122, the pope announced his nomination and consecration in a letter addressed to Countess Sikelgaita of Brindisi and nobleman Tancredo de Conversano; this letter confirmed that the newly consecrated archbishop was previously cardinal deacon; after receiving episcopal consecration, he resigned his cardinalitial dignity, as was customary at the time; moreover, the episcopal rights of the see of Oria were united with to the ones of the see of Brindisi. On that same day, the archbishop received from the pope a privilege concerning the possessions and privileges of his see; as well as the confirmation that the use of the pallium had been given. Between 1126 and 1129, there was a dispute between Archbishop Baialardus and the nuns of S. Benedict because of the jurisdiction over a church; Pope Honorius II asked Countess Sikelgaita of Brindisi, to resolve the controversy; Cardinal Pietro, deacon of S. Maria in Via Lata, was sent by the pope as legate; a gathering of prelates resolved the dispute in favor of the nuns. In April 1130, Count Tancredo granted a gift to the Church of Brindisi and its archbishop, Baialardo. This is the last time the archbishop is mentioned in a document.
