(23) 2. BOCCAPECORA, Teobaldo (?-?)

Birth. (No date found), Rome. Of the Boccapecorini family. He is also listed as Teobaldo only; as Teobaldo Bocapecci; as Teobaldo Buccapeco; and as Theobald Buccapecus.

Education. (No information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Anastasia in the consistory of December 1122 (1). Subscribed papal bulls issued between April 6, 1123 and April 1, 1124. Participated in the papal election of 1124 and was reluctantly elected pope.

Papacy. Elected pope on December 15 or 16, 1124; he had just been clothed with the pontifical insignias and taken the name Celestine II (2) when Roberto Frangipani and his armed men broke into the church of S. Pancrazio al Laterano, where a Te Deum was celebrating the election; Frangipani made Cardinal Lamberto Scannabecchi, who had supported the election of Cardinal Teobaldo, be proclaimed as Pope Honorius II; during the struggle, Cardinal Teodaldo was wounded and resigned on the following day in favor of Pope Honorius II to avoid a schism and "rentra dans l'obscurité" (3); Cardinal Scannabecchi accepted the pontificate after a new election took place. Since Celestine II was not consecrated or enthroned, his name does not appear in the list of popes but he should not be considered an antipope because his election was regular and legitimate. He was replaced in his cardinalitial title in 1126. Some sources considered him an antipope.

Maria Nuova by March 23, 1112. Chacón, Vitæ, et res gestæ Pontificvm Romanorum et S. R. E. (2) On September 26, 1143, Cardinal Guido di Castello (1127) was elected to the papacy and took the name Celestine II because Cardinal Boccapecora, not having been consecrated or enthroned, is not considered a pope and, therefore, does not count in the papal chronology.

Subscribed papal bulls issued between April 6, 1123 and June 4, 1124; April 2, 1125 and April 19, 1129. Participated in the papal election of 1124, in which Pope Honorius II was elected.
