Birth. (No date found), in the archdiocese of Reims, France. Of an aristocratic family. Relative of Bishop Hughes of Amiens.

Education. In his youth, he studied theology in Laon. Entered the Order of Saint Benedict (Benedictines) Cluniacense.

Early life. Joined the service of the church when his friend Radulf became archbishop of Reims in 1106. Canon of the metropolitan cathedral chapter of Reims. Joined the Benedictines at the monastery of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, Paris, in 1119.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Pierre le Vénérable named him prior of the monastery of Saint-Martin-des-Champs in 1126

Cardinalate. Created cardinal bishop of Albano in a consistory celebrated in 1126. Consecrated (no information found). He was legate in France several times and presided the Council of Troyes in January 1128. Participated in the papal election of 1130, in which Pope Innocent II was elected. Subscribed papal bulls issued between April 3, 1130 and November 7, 1135. He accompanied Pope Innocent II in exile and always was loyal to the pope; he went with the pope to France, Spain, England and Germany and greatly contributed to rally those countries to Innocent II's cause against Antipope Anacletus II. He retired to the monastery of S. Zenon in Pisa, where he died with great fame of holiness.

Death. December 25, 1135, monastery of S. Zenon, Pisa. Buried in Pisa. His biography was written by Pierre le Vénérable.

Beatification. Inscribed as a blessed in the Benedictine and Gallican martyrologies.

"Essai de liste générale des cardinaux. Les cardinaux du XIIè siècle". Annuaire Pontifical Catholique 1927, p. 149, no. 16, says that he was created cardinal priest of S. Clemente in 1088; that he opted for an unknown title toward 1095; for the title of S. Cecilia toward 1120; and that he died in 1128. The funeral monument of his family, which photograph is linked above, indicates that he was created cardinal priest of S. Cecilia in 1126.
