Birth. (No date found), Rome. Of a patrician family. Grand-nephew of Antipope Anacletus II. Nephew of Cardinal Ugo Pierleoni, Can. Reg. of St. Victor (1164). His first name is also listed as Uguccione.

Education. Studied at the University of Paris. Joined the Canons Regular of Saint-Victor of Paris.

Early life. Notary of the Holy Roman Church.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Angelo in Pescheria in the consistory of 1171 (1). Subscribed papal bulls issued between March 14, 1173 and June 13, 1178. Legate a latere in France, England and Scotland; he was received in England with high honors by King Henry II and his son; the king obtained from the legate the faculty of citing to the civil tribunals of the kingdom those ecclesiastics who were accused of having been hunting in the royal forests; this decision of the legate greatly angered the clergy; he convoked a council in Westminster to resolve the differences between the archbishops of Canterbury and York concerning the primacy of the kingdom and who should sit at the right of the legate; when the supporters of the archbishop of York appealed directly to the pope, the legate considered that the council had been violated and left without having accomplished his main purpose; he went before Prince Henry of Germany to confirm the peace between his father the emperor and the pontiff, with the Sicilians and the Lombards. He was present at the Lateran palace at the absolution of King William of Scotland, who had been excommunicated by Archbishop Roger of York. Accompanied Pope Alexander III to Venice in March 1177; returned with the pope to Rome. Opted for the order of cardinal priests and the title of S. Clemente in September 1178. Together with Cardinals Ubaldo Allucingoli, bishop of Ostia and Velletri, and Giovanni of Ss. Giovanni e Paolo, he was named mediator of the peace stipulated between the pope and the Roman people; they obtained the submission of Antipope Innocent III, who was imprisoned in the fortress of Cavi with some of his followers. Archpriest of the patriarchal Vatican basilica. Subscribed papal bulls issued between December 21, 1178 and May 24, 1181; November 5, 1181 and July 15, 1182. Participated in the papal election of 1181, in which Pope Lucius III was elected. Vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Church in 1182 and 1183.

Episcopate. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Ostia e Velletri in 1183. Consecrated (no information found). Subscribed papal bulls issued between June 15, 1184 and November 11, 1185; December 9, 1185 and October 13, 1187; October 31 and December 11, 1187; December 23, 1187 and October 29, 1188. Legate in Germany. Participated in the papal election of 1185, in which Pope Urban III was elected. Participated in the first papal election of 1187, in which Pope Gregory VIII was elected. Participated in the second papal election of 1187 and was elected to the papacy but declined in favor of Cardinal Paolo Scolari, who became Pope Clement III.

Education. "... insigne nella dottrina dei canoni ..." (1). He obtained the title of magister.

Early life. For seven years, he worked closely with Archbishop Thomas Becket of Canterbury, future martyr and saint. Subdeacon of the Holy Roman Church in 1167.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Benevento in 1171; resigned the see after April 1177. Consecrated (no information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Ciriaco alle Terme in the consistory of 1171.

Death. 1179, probably in Benevento. Buried in the metropolitan cathedral of Benevento

Legate in Lombardy in 1178 and 1186. Opted for the order of cardinal priests and the title of S. Maria in Trastevere in 1179. Subscribed papal bulls issued between February 26, 1180 and August 15, 1181; November 5, 1181 and November 11, 1185; December 16, 1185 and October 13, 1187; October 31 and December 11, 1187; December 23, 1187 and June 26, 1189. Participated in the papal election of 1181, in which Pope Lucius III was elected. Participated in the papal election of 1185, in which Pope Urban III was elected. Participated in the first papal election of 1187, in which Pope Gregory VIII was elected. Participated in the second papal election of 1187, in which Pope Clement III was elected. He was a very close counselor of King Guglielmo Majo of Naples. He authored numerous treatises in philosophy and theology; and a collection of canons Compilatio decretorum, at the request of Pedro, bishop of Pamplona, which he finished in 1182, after twenty years of work.
