(9) 1. MASCA, Pandolfo (1101-1201)

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of Ss. XII Apostoli in the consistory of December 1182. Subscribed papal bulls issued between January 4, 1183 and November 11, 1185. Participated in the papal election of 1185, in which Pope Urban III was elected. Subscribed papal bulls issued between December 9, 1185 and July 19, 1187. Participated in the first papal election of 1187, in which Pope Gregory VIII was elected. Participated in the second papal election of 1187, in which Pope Clement III was elected. Subscribed papal bulls issued betwen April 5, 1188 and February 17, 1191. Participated in the papal election of 1191, in which Pope Celestine III was elected. Subscribed papal bulls issued between May 2, 1191 and November 11, 1200. Legate in Genoa in the spring of 1196 to obtain the peace with the warring Pisa. He was present at the canonization of Giovanni Gualberto in October 1193. In February 1197, Heinrich VI von Türent requested the pope to send Cardinals Ottaviano di Ostia, Pietro of S. Cecilia, and Pandolfo Masca as legates into his kingdom to settle the ecclesiastical disputes; the legation was not reached, especially as Cardinal Pandolfo, since the beginning of March 1197, was in Tuscany as apostolic legate to prepare the municipalities against the German domination. Participated in the papal election of 1198, in which Pope Innocent III was elected. Legate in Tuscany again; he returned to the Curia in 1199 and acted as auditor several times. Cardinal protoprete in 1200. He wrote a "Lives of the Popes" from Saint Peter to Innocent III. He returned to Lucca after 1201 and remained there until his death.

Death. 1201 (2), Lucca, at an advanced age. Buried in Lucca.
