(12) 1. ANNIBALDI, Riccardo (ca. 1200/1210-1276)

Birth. Ca. 12100/1210, Rome. Son of Annibaldo (or Pietro) Annibaldi and a sister of Pope Innocent III. Uncle of Cardinal Annibale d'Annibaldi, O.P. (1262). Brother of Annibaldo Annibaldi, senator of Rome in 1223-24, 1231, 1241 and 1243-1244. Relative (nephew?) of Pope Alexander IV. His last name is also listed as Annibaldo; as Annibaldeschi di Molara; and as Annibaldi della Molara. Some sources confuse him with Cardinal Riccardo di Montecassino, O.S.B. (1255/1256).

Education. (No information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Angelo in Pescheria in the consistory of 1237 (1). Subscribed the papal bulls issued between April 15, 1239 and May 20, 1240; September 26, 1243 and July 22, 1254; April 9, 1255 and April 17, 1261; January 23, 1262 and January 30, 1264; February 26, 1265 and February 28, 1268; and the one on January 13, 1273. Rector de Campagna e Marittima, 1239-1249. Participated in the papal election of 1241, in which was elected Pope Celestine IV. Participated in the papal election of 1241-1243, in which was elected Pope Innocent IV. He remained in Italy when Pope Innocent IV escaped to Lyon in 1244. Vicar of Rome from 1251 until 1260. Sent with Cardinal Gian Gaetano Orsini to Florence to pacify the city in 1252. Cardinal protodeacon in 1254. Participated in the papal election of 1254, in which was elected his uncle Pope Alexander IV; as cardinal protodeacon, he crowned the new pope. Archpriest of the patriarchal Vatican basilica from 1254 until his death. Participated in the papal election of 1261, in which was elected Pope Urban IV; he was one of the cardinals to whom was entrusted the election of the new pope by compromise. Participated in the papal election of 1264-1265, in which was elected Pope Clement IV; he was one of the cardinals to whom was entrusted the election of the new pope by compromise. Participated in the papal election of 1268-1271, in which was elected Pope Gregory X; he was one of the six cardinals to whom was entrusted the election of the new pope by compromise. Did not participate in the first conclave of 1276, which elected Pope Innocent V. Participated in the second conclave of 1276, which elected Pope Adrian V. Participated in the third conclave of 1276, which elected Pope John XXI. First protector of the Order of the Hermits of Saint Augustine (Augustinians).

Death. October 4, 1276 (2), Rome. Buried in the patriarchal Lateran basilica, Rome (3). His tomb was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio.

Eubel, Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi, I, 6 and 49, says that he died in 1276, without giving day or month. Paravicini Bagliani, Cardinali di curia e "familiae" cardinalizie. Dal 1227 al 1254, I, 149, says that he died on September 4, 1276.

Roth, in his biography in Italian, linked above, says that the epitaph, which is on a simple sepulchral stone in the left nave of the patriarchal Laterna basilica, was composed in the pontificate of Pope Clement VIII, and gives erroneous dates of his promotion to the cardinalate (1240) and his death (1274).

(13) 2. CASSARD, François (?-1237)

Birth. (No date found), Fayet, diocese of Grenoble, France. Of one of the oldest families of the Dauphiné. His last name is also listed as Caseard.

Education. Obtained a doctorate in utroque iure, both canon and civil law.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Tours, 1227; occupied the see until 1228 (1). Consecrated (no information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of Ss. Silvestro e Marino ai Monti in the consistory of 1237. He did not subscribe any papal bulls issued in his time.

Death. August 7, 1237, of a fall from a horse, Lyon. Buried in the Dominican church in Lyon (2).
