Pope Clement IV (1265-1268)
Consistory of 1265 or 1268 (I)

(1) 1. AYGLIER, O.S.B., Bernard (ca. 1216-1282)

Birth. Ca. 1216, Lyon, France. His last name is also listed as Aygler; as Ayglerius; as Aygler; as Ayglier; and as Aiglier.

Education. Entered the Order of Saint Benedict (Benedictines) in the monastery of Savigny, archdiocese of Lyon.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Named papal chaplain by Pope Innocent IV. Auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota ca. 1244. Abbot of the monastery of S. Onorato in the island of Lerino in 1256. Carlo d'Anjou had him go to Naples and Sicily when he became the monarch of that kingdom; he became privy counselor of the king. Pope Urban IV named him 59th abbot of Monte Cassino, ca. 1263; he occupied the post until his death; he recalled the monks from exile, made the monastic discipline flourish and recuperated the good that had been spoiled; he founded a hospital in S. Germano; celebrated a synod; and granted a church in that place to the Dominicans at the request of Tommaso d'Aquino, future saint.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal in the consistory of 1265 or 1268; his title or deaconry is not known (1). Legate in France against the Albigense. Legate in Constantinople against the schismatics and to promote the war against the Saracens. Returned to Monte Cassino and convinced King Carlo d'Anjou to withdraw his troops that had occupied the adjacent castle. He did not participate in any of the conclaves that took place after his supposed promotion to the cardinalate.

Death. April 4, 1282, Monte Cassino. Buried in the abbey of Monte Cassino, without any marks or epitaph.

(1) This is according to the catalog of abbots of Monte Cassino; Eubel, Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi, I, p. 8, says that did not find one single cardinal created by Pope Clement IV; and in n. 12, indicates that Chacón, Vitae et res gestae Pontificum Romanorum et S. R. E. Cardinalium, II, cols. 175-176, lists him as the only cardinal created by this pope. "Essai de liste générale des cardinaux. Les cardinaux du XIIIè siècle". Annuaire Pontifical Catholique 1929, p. 125-126, confirms this information and includes his biography. Cristofori, Cronotassi dei cardinali de Santa Romana Chiesa, p. 267, considers his promotion "uncertain".
