Birth. Towards the end of 1566, Rimini. Of a modest family originally from Cesena.

Education. Studied at the University of Bologna, where he obtained a doctorate in law; he also studied music.

Early life. Went to Rome and became organist at the hospital of S. Rocco a Ripetta. Procurator of causes of Francesco Borghese, brother of Cardinal Camillo Borghese, future Pope Paul V. Auditor general of Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli-Borghese. Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber (?). Canon of the patriarchal Lateran basilica, Rome.

Sacred orders. (No information found).

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Nazareth, retaining his canonship for three months, November 5, 1608. Consecrated, Sunday, November 16, 1608, Sistine Chapel, Rome, by Fabio Biondi, titular Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, assisted by Metello Bichi, bishop of Sovana, and by Giambattista Leni, bishop of Mileto.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of November 24, 1608; received the red hat on November 29, 1608; and the title of S. Bartolomeo all'Isola on December 10, 1608. Archpriest of the patriarchal Liberian basilica, Rome. Datary of His Holiness for three years. Transferred to the see of Cesena, retaining the titular see of Nazareth, March 11, 1609. Left the Roman Curia and went to Cesena when he fell from grace with Pope Paul V, in 1612, until the pope's death; established in the Shrine of Loreto, in his diocese, a chaplaincy with the obligation of offering a daily Mass in suffrage of Pope Paul V, his former benefactor. Participated in the conclave of 1621, which elected Pope Gregory XV. Opted for the title of S. Pietro in Vincoli, October 13, 1621.

Death. April 21, 1622, Rome. Buried in the church of Santissimo Nome di Gesù, Rome (1).

Birth. 1573, Rome. Of a patrician family. Second of the five children of Girolamo Leni and Licinia Caffarelli. The other siblings were Camillo, Tarquinia, Lucrezia and Antonia, both nuns of Ss. Domenico e Sisto. Cousin of Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli-Borghese (1605), on his mother's side. His last name is also listed as Lenius.

Death. November 3, 1627, Rome. Buried in the chapel of S. Giovanni Battista, which he had built, in the patriarchal Lateran basilica, Rome. With his death, the family was extinguished. His only and universal heir was the church of S. Carlo ai Catinari, Rome.

Birth. Probably in September 1559, Colorno, Parma. Son of Astolfo Margotti. He had at least three brothers: Ottavio, Giulio and Giovanni Francesco. From a poor and obscure family. His last name is also listed as Margozio.

Education. (No information found).

Early life. Went to Rome at a young age; was introduced into the family of Cardinal Cinzio Aldobrandini and was his assistant of chamber and later, his secretary. Chamberlain and later, secretary, to Pope Clement VIII. Protonotary apostolic.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of November 24, 1608; received the red hat on November 29, 1608; and the title of S. Callisto on December 10, 1608. Legate in Avignon (?), 1608 (1).

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Viterbo, January 26, 1609. Consecrated, February 15, 1609, Sistine Chapel, Vatican, by Pope Paul V, assisted by Cardinal Domenico Pinelli, bishop of Ostia e Velletri, dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, by Cardinals Fabrizio Verallo and Michelangelo Tonti. Assisting cardinal deacons were Andrea Baroni Peretti Montalto and Luigi Capponi. Governed the diocese through a vicar. Opted for the title of S. Pietro in Vincoli, January 11, 1610.

Death. February 28, 1611, after a brief illness produced by a sore in an arm, Rome. Buried in his title, S. Pietro in Vincoli (2).

(19) 5. CAPPONI, Luigi (1583-1659)

Birth. 1583 (1), Florence. From a patrician family with several senators. Third of the four children of Senator Francesco Capponi and Ludovica di Ristoro Macchiavelli. The other siblings were Pier Maria, Filippo and Simona. He is also listed as Aloysius Capponius.

Education. Went to Rome when he was very young to attend the Seminario Romano; then, he studied in Perugia; and later, he returned to Rome and studied at the Archgymnasium of Rome (La Sapienza University), where he obtained a doctorate in law.

Early life. Papal prelate. Treasurer of the Apostolic Chamber, April 1605.

Sacred orders. (No information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon in the consistory of November 24, 1608; received the red hat on November 29, 1608; and the deaconry of S. Agata alla Suburra on December 10, 1608. Legate in Bologna, August 27, 1614; he had the special responsibility of coordinating the various initiatives planned by the pope to reclaim the territory of the Po delta and regulate the waters of the rivers of the region; he fell gravely ill and on December 2, 1619, Cardinal Giulio Savelli was named legate for a triennium. Opted for the deaconry of S. Angelo in Pescheria, January 13, 1620. Participated in the conclave of 1621, which elected Pope Gregory XV.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Ravenna, March 3, 1621. Consecrated, Sunday March 14, 1621, church of S. Biagio in Montecitorio, by Cardinal Roberto Ubaldini, assisted by Orazio Ottavio Rodolfi, bishop of Ariano, and by Alessandro Scappi, bishop of Campagna. Granted the pallium on March 29, 1621. During his episcopate, he worked with great zeal in the pastoral care; repeatedly visited the parishes of the diocese; convoked a diocesan synod in 1627; and a provincial one in 1632; beautified the metropolitan cathedral; and restored and expanded the archiepiscopal palace; he acted as a peacemaker between two parties that divided the city, that were called the "Guelph" and "Ghibelline", and that with their struggles had troubled the economic life and the tranquility of the citizens. He had a great devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary and to her dedicated many homilies. Opted for the order of cardinal priests, April 19, 1621; and opted for the title of S. Carlo ai Catinari, May 5, 1621. Opted for the title of S. Pietro in Vincoli, May 2, 1622. Since 1623, he was a member of the Congregation of the Cardinals who ran the office created by Pope Gregory XV to coordinate missionary activity, which became the Congregation of Propaganda Fide; when Cardinal Antonio Barberini, iuniore, who was the prefect, was forced to flee to France because of the hostility of the new Pope Innocent X, Cardinal Capponi, on the nomination of the other cardinals who directed the congregation, assumed the functions of pro-prefect, which he did not give up when Cardinal Barberini returned and resumed his office. Participated in the conclave of 1623, which elected Pope Urban VIII. Opted for the title of S. Lorenzo in Lucina, August 20, 1629. Cardinal protoprete. Co-legate of Bologna, Ferrara, and Romandiola, with Cardinal Antonio Barberini, iuniore, December 1, 1642. Participated in the conclave of 1644, which elected Pope Innocent X. Prefect of the S.C. of Rites and Ceremonies from February 1645 until his death. Resigned the government of the archdiocese of Ravenna in favor of his nephew, Luca Torregiani, on September 18, 1645. Prefect of the S.C. of Propaganda Fide, October 27, 1645. Named librarian of the Holy Roman Church, ad vitam, on August 4, 1649; not being a man of letters, he chose appropriate collaborators and worked so that the library realized better its function. Participated in the conclave of 1655, which elected Pope Alexander VII. He redacted his will in 1655 and in it left part of his wealth to the Congregation of Propaganda Fide to build and equip a printing press.

Death. April 6, 1659, Palm Sunday, between 10 and 11 a.m., in his Roman palace. Buried in his title, S. Lorenzo in Lucina (2).
