Birth. 1564 or 1565, Naples. Of the princes of Bisignano. Second of the seven children of Giovanni Giacomo Sanseverino, count of Saponara, and Cornelia Pignatelli, marchioness of Cerchiaro. The other siblings were Ferdinando, Fabrizio, Delia, Vittoria, Ascanio and Delia (Aurelia). The family gave the church several cardinals: Guglielmo Sanseverino (1378); Federico Sanseverino (1489); Antonio Sanseverino, O.S.Io.Hieros. (1527); and Stanislao Sanseverino (1816).

Early life. Referendary of the Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace in the pontificate of Pope Gregory XIII.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Rossano, with dispensation for not having yet reached the canonical age, December 2, 1592. Consecrated, December 21, 1592, church of S. Maria Vallicella, Rome, by Cardinal Alessandro de' Medici, archbishop of Florence (no information found on the co-consecrators). In the same ceremony was consecrated Francesco Maria Tarugi, archbishop of Avignon and future cardinal. He was granted the pallium on January 11, 1593. Transferred to the metropolitan see of Salerno, November 19, 1612, after having been presented by the king of Spain. Nuncio to Flanders, June 1, 1619 until May 1621.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of July 21, 1621; received the red hat and the title of S. Stefano al Monte Celio, August 30, 1621. Participated in the conclave of 1623, which elected Pope Urban VIII. Opted for the title of S. Eusebio, September 27, 1623.

Death. December 25, 1623, in his residence in Salerno. Buried in the metropolitan cathedral of Salerno. The news of his death reached Rome on December 31, 1623.

Birth. 1574, Bologna. Of a patrician family. Son of Tommaso Gozzadini and Olimpia Bianchini. Cousin of Pope Gregory XV. Distant cousin of Cardinal Ulisse Giuseppe Gozzadini (1709). His last name is also listed as Gozzadino.

Education. Studied at the University of Bologna, where he earned a doctorate in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, in 1596.
