Birth. November 12, 1662, Rome. Of the princes of Palestrina. Great-grand-nephew of Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) and of Cardinal Antonio Barberini, seniore, O.F.M.Cap. (1624). Grand-nephew of Cardinals Francesco Barberini, seniore (1623) and Antonio Barberini, iuniore, O.S.Io.Hieros. (1627). Nephew of Carlo Barberini (1653) and cousin of Cardinal Rinaldo d'Este (1686).

Education. (No information found). Dedicated to the ecclesiastical state at a young age.

Early life. According to the custom of the time, purchased a clericate in the Apostolic Chamber, in the pontificate of Pope Innocent XI. Auditor of the Apostolic Chamber.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon in the consistory of November 13, 1690; received the red hat and the deaconry of S. Angelo in Pescheria, November 27, 1690. Granted dispensation for not having yet received the minor orders and for having an uncle and a cousin in the Sacred College of Cardinals. Participated in the conclave of 1691, which elected Pope Innocent XII. Legate in Romandiola, January 4, 1694. Received the minor orders, February 14, 1694; the subdiaconate, November 22, 1699; and the diaconate, September 26, 1700. Participated in the conclave of 1700, which elected Pope Clement XI. Abbot comendatario of Farfa and of Subiaco since 1704. Opted for the order of priests and the title of S. Bernardo alle Terme, May 6, 1715.

Priesthood. Ordained, September 15, 1715. Opted for the title of S. Prassede, May 11, 1718.

Episcopate. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Palestrina, March 3, 1721. Consecrated, March 16, 1721, monastic church of the Holy Incarnation of the Discalced Carmelites, called the Barberine Monastery, Rome, by Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci, bishop of Albano, secretary of State, assisted by Vincenzo Petra, titular archbishop of Damasco, and by Bernardo Maria Conti, O.S.B., former bishop of Terracina. Participated in the conclave of 1721, which elected Pope Innocent XIII. Participated in the conclave of 1724, which elected Pope Benedict XIII. Prefect of the S.C. of Bishops and Regulars, June 22, 1726 until his death. Opted for the suburbicarian see of Ostia e Velletri, proper of the dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals, July 1, 1726. Prefect of the S.C. of Waters. Participated in the conclave of 1730, which elected Pope Clement XII.

Death. August 17, 1738, at 9 a.m., in his Roman palace. Solemnly transferred to the church of S. Andrea della Valle, Rome, where the funeral took place, and was buried there, temporarily. Later, his remains were translated to Palestrina, and buried in the church of S. Rosalia, in the tomb of his ancestors.

Birth. June 10, 1671, Rome. Second of the four sons of Gaspare Altieri, prince of Roriolo e Viano, duke of Monterano, and Laura Altieri, cousin of Pope Clement X. Brother of Cardinal Giambattista Altieri, iuniore (1724). Nephew of Cardinal Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni (1664). Uncle of Cardinal Vincenzo Maria Altieri (1777).

Early life. Protonotary apostolic de numero participantium, November 11, 1690.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon in the consistory of November 13, 1690; granted dispensation for not being twenty-two years old, the canonical age, at the moment of his promotion and for having an uncle in the Sacred College of Cardinals, November 13, 1690; received the red hat and the deaconry of S. Maria in Aquiro, November 27, 1690. Participated in the conclave of 1691, which elected Pope Innocent XII. Legate in Urbino, September 24, 1696; because of a disagreement with the pope, resigned his legation and returned to Rome. Received the subdiaconate, November 30, 1699; diaconate, August 29, 1700. Participated in the conclave of 1700, which elected Pope Clement XI. Opted for the deaconry of S. Nicola in Carcere, June 8, 1707. Opted for the deaconry of S. Agata in Suburra, November 14, 1718. Participated in the conclave of 1721, which elected Pope Innocent XIII. Participated in the conclave of 1724, which elected Pope Benedict XIII. Participated in the conclave of 1730, which elected Pope Clement XII. Opted for the deaconry of S. Maria in Via Lata, July 24, 1730. Cardinal protodeacon. Legate in Ravenna, 1735. Did not participate in the conclave of 1740, which elected Pope Benedict XIV, because of illness. He prepared his testament on July 18, 1741.

Death. August 3, 1741, at 11 p.m., after a long illness, Rome. On the following day in the afternoon, according to his will, was transferred to the church of S. Maria in Portico, Rome, where the funeral took place, on August 5, 1741; and was buried in the Chapel of S. Giovanni Battista, built by his family in that same church. In his testament he indicated that his tombstone should have his name, the day and year of his birth and of his death.
