(24) 1. GOZZADINI, Ulisse Giuseppe (1650-1728)

Birth. October 10, 1650, Bologna. Of a patrician and senatorial family. Son of Palatine Count Marcantonio Gozzadini and Ginevra Leoni. He was count of Liano. Grand-nephew of Cardinal Marcantonio Gozzadini (1621). He is also listed as Ulysses Josephus Gozzadinus; his first name as Ulisse only; and his last name as Gozzadino; and as Gozzadinus.

Education. Studied at the University of Bologna, where he obtained doctorates in canon law in 1670; and in civil law in 1674.

Early life. Page in the court of Tuscany, 1658. Magistrate of degli Anziani, 1673. Canon theologian of the cathedral chapter of Bologna, 1673-1693. Professor of law at the University of Bologna, 1674-1694. Went to Rome in 1693. Canon of the chapter of the patriarchal Vatican basilica, January 18, 1693. Consistorial lawyer. Secretary of Memorials, December 24, 1695. Secretary of Briefs to the Princes, August 3, 1697. Canon beneficiato of San Biagio di Sala and of San Martino di Pedriolo, 1698.

Sacred orders. (No information found).

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Teodosia, September 8, 1700. Consecrated, September 12, 1700, church of S. Ignazio, Rome, by Cardinal Bandino Panciatici, assisted by Prospero Bottini, titular archbishop of Mira, and by Leonardo Marsili, archbishop of Siena. Confirmed as Secretary of Briefs to the Princes by the new Pope Clement XI, December 7, 1700. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, December 8, 1700. Acting secretary of the S.C. of Propaganda Fide, May to November 1706.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of April 15, 1709; received the red hat on April 18, 1709; and the title of S. Croce in Gerusalemme on June 19, 1709. Commendatario of the church of San Lazzaro, next to Piacenza, 1709. Transferred to the see of Imola, with personal title of archbishop, February 19, 1710. Legate in Romagna, November 27, 1713 until April 1717. Legate a latere to represent the pope at the wedding, by power, of King Felipe V of Spain and Princess Isabella Farnese of Parma, August 20, 1714, in the cathedral of Parma. He went to the frontier of Emilia to receive, in the name of the pope, King James III of Great Britain, who going from France to Rome. He celebrated a synod in hs diocese. Participated in the conclave of 1721, which elected Pope Innocent XIII. Participated in the conclave of 1724, which elected Pope Benedict XIII. In the Jubilee Year of 1725, he received the pilgrims in Imola and served them with his own hands.

Death. March 20, 1728, of an apoplexy, Imola. Exposed in the cathedral of Imola, and buried there according to his will (1). Giambattista Rondoni wrote the life of the cardinal in Latin and published it in Bologna in 1728.

(25) 2. SANVITALE, Antonio Francesco (1660-1714)

Birth. February 10, 1660, Parma. Of an ancient and illustrious family. Son of Luigi Sanvitale, first count of Belforte, and Margherita Talenti Fiorenza, of the marquises of Conturbia. He is also listed as Antonius Franciscus Sanvitalis; as Antonio Francesco San-Vitale; and as Antonius Sanuitalis.

Education. Initial studies at Collegio Clementino, Roma, from 1676 to 682; then, studied at the University of Parma, where he earned a doctorate in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, on June 27, 1684.

Early life. Entered the ecclesiastical state and went to Rome. Joined the Roman prelature in the pontificate of Pope Innocent XII and was named referendary of the Supreme Tribunals of Justice and of Grace, January 24, 1696 (1). Voter of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature in July 1697; and consultor of the Supreme S.C. of the Holy Office. Canon of the chapter of the patriarchal Vatican basilica, August 22, 1698.

Priesthood. Ordained, December 27, 1699. Vice-legate in Avignon from March 15, 1700 until March 31, 1703.

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Efeso, July 16, 1703. Consecrated, July 22, 1703, church of S. Andrea della Valle, Rome, by Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, August 15, 1703. Nuncio in Florence, August 17, 1703 (2). Called back to Rome by the pope, he was named assessor of the Supreme S.C. of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, June 1706. Prefect of the Cubiculi of His Holiness, November 1, 1707. Transferred to metropolitan see of Urbino, May 6, 1709; he received the pallium on June 19, 1709. As archbishop, he distinguished himself for the zeal with which he carried out the pastoral visits; for his generosity towards the poor; and for the celebration of several diocesan synod.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal and reserved in pectore in the consistory of April 15, 1709; published in the consistory of July 22, 1709; received the red hat on July 27, 1709; and the title of S. Pietro in Montorio on September 9, 1709. He was granted the pallium on June 19, 1709.

Death. December 17, 1714, at 7 p.m., Urbino. Exposed and buried in the metropolitan cathedral of Urbino (3).
