(27) 1. BORGHESE, Francesco (1697-1759)

Birth. May 20, 1697, Rome (1). Sixth of the nine children of Marcantonio Borghese, viceroy of Naples, and Livia (or Flaminia) Spinola, of the princes of Sant'Angelo. The other siblings were Flaminia, Camillo Antonio, Maria Maddalena, Maria Vittoria, Eleonora (Olimpia), Giacomo (his wife was a cousin of Cardinal Niccolò Coscia (1725)), Maria Antonia (a nun), and Livia (prioress of Ss. Domenico e Sisto). He was baptized with the names Francesco Scipione Maria. Uncle of Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1770). His last name is also listed as Burghesius.

Education. Studied at La Sapienza University, Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in theology on October 5, 1717; and another one in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, on April 1, 1721; among his professors was the famous Father Ignatius Hyacinthus Amat de Graveson, O.P.

Early life. Domestic prelate of His Holiness. Referendary of the Supreme Tribunals of the Apostolic Signature of Justice and of Grace, September 9, 1724. Received the minor orders, January 29, 1728. Master of chamber of His Holiness, February 1, 1728, replacing Francesco Antonio Finy, who had been promoted to the cardinalate. Received the minor orders, January 29, 1728; the subdiaconate, February 8, 1728; and the diaconate, February 19, 1728.

Priesthood. Ordained, February 25, 1728.

Episcopate. Elected titular archbishop of Traianopoli, March 8, 1728. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, March 14, 1728. Consecrated, March 30, 1728, Rome, by Pope Benedict XIII. Prefect of the Apostolic Palace, March 26, 1729.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of July 6, 1729; received the red hat and the title of Pietro in Montorio, August 3, 1729. Participated in the conclave of 1730, which elected Pope Clement XII. Opted for the title of S. Silvestro in Capite, March 31, 1732. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals, January 27, 1738. Participated in the conclave of 1740, which elected Pope Benedict XIV. Protector of Germany, July 1742. Opted for the title of S. Maria in Trastevere, May 20, 1743. Opted for the order of bishops and the suburbicarian see of Albano, September 25, 1752. In 1755, he was named coadjutor of the abbot commendatario of Grottaferrata. Participated in the conclave of 1758, which elected Pope Clement XIII. He built a palace in Albano, which he later gave to the diocese. Opted for the suburbicarian see of Porto e Santa Rufina, February 12, 1759. Vice-dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals.

Death. June 21, 1759, at 4 p.m., Rome. Transferred in the evening to the church of S. Lorenzo in Lucina, Rome, where the funeral took place on June 23, 1759. Transferred, privately, in the afternoon to the patriarchal Liberian basilica, and buried in his family's tomb in the sumptuous chapel of the Blessed Virgin, called Paolina.

(28) 2. FERRERI, O.P., Carlo Vincenzo (1682-1742)

Birth. April 11, 1682, Nice, Savoy (1). Third of the four children of Bartolomeo Ferreri, counselor and referendary of State of His Royal Highness, and Caterina Thaon. The other children were Giulio Cesare, Anna Francesca and Pietro Onorato. At baptism, he received the names of Carlo Vincenzo Maria. His first name is also listed as Carolus Vincentius as Carlo Vincenzo Marias; and his last name as Ferrerius.

Education. Entered the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). Magister in theology, May 21, 1723.

Priesthood. Ordained, March 15, 1705. After having taught at several Dominican houses of study, he became professor of theology at the University of Turin.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Alessandria della Paglia, July 30, 1727. Consecrated, August 4, 1727, Rome, by Pope Benedict XIII, assisted by Giacinto Gaetano Chiurlia, bishop of Giovinazzo, and by Gaspare Pizzolanti, bishop of Cervia. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, August 15, 1727. He was one of the negotiators of the concordat between the Holy See and King Victor Amadeus II of Sardinia in 1729. He was promoted to the cardinalate at the recommendation of the king of Sardinia.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of July 6, 1729; with the apostolic bull of July 16, 1729, the pope sent him the red biretta; received the red hat and the title of S. Maria in Via, December 23, 1729. Nominated to the see of Vercelli by the king of Sardinia, July 12, 1729. Transferred to the see of Vercelli, December 23, 1729. Participated in the conclave of 1730, which elected Pope Clement XII. He was named abbot commendatario of a rich abbey but because of the conflict between Pope Clement XII and the king of Sardinia, he was never able to take possession of the same. Participated in the conclave of 1740, which elected Pope Benedict XIV.

Death. December 9, 1742, Vercelli. Exposed and buried in the cathedral of Vercelli.
