(1) 1. PIETRO (?-after 879)

Cardinalate. Presbyter cardinalis of the title of S. Crisogono in 875 (?). In April-May 878, he was recommended by the pope to Empress Angelberge, widow of Emperor Louis II the Younger; the papal bull was entitled "Reminiscentes omnium". Participated in the synod celebrated by Pope John VIII in 879 in Rome, which redacted the Commonitorio consigned to the legates to the synod of Constantinople, requested by Patriarch Photius. On August 16, 879, he was sent as legate to Constantinople (along with Cardinal Eugenio, bishop of Ostia; and Bishop Paulo of Ancona) to participate in that synod convoked for a final resolution of the dispute between the patriarch and the pope, reaffirming the union between East and West; the patriarch's main motive was to annul the dispositions of the synod of October 869 that had deposed him; the new synod was held in the cathedral of St. Sophia in November 879; in it, the patriarch obtained all he wanted supported by the great majority of the participants; the legates agreed to everything the majority wished; as soon as the legates had returned to Rome, Patriarch Photius sent the acts of the synod to the pope for his confirmation; instead Pope John VIII again excommunicated him; the schism broke out again and it lasted seven years, until the death of Emperor Basil I in 886. Cardinal Pietro was anathematized because of his conduct in the synod.

Death. After 879 (no place found. Buried (no information found).
