(5) 2. ANASTASIO (?-913)

Birth. (No date found), Rome. Son of Lutiano.

Education. (No information found).

Cardinalate. Deacon cardinalis of the Holy Roman Church at an unknown date between 904 and 911.

Papacy. Elected pope in June or September 911. Took the name Anastasius III. He granted the pallium to Ragemberto, bishop of Vercelli, on February 10, 912. By the bull "Convenit apostolico", issued in January 911/913, he granted the pallium and miter to Hogero, archbishop of Hamburg; by the same bull, the pope also granted the archbishop jurisdiction over the Swedish, Danish, Norwegians, Icelanders, Greenlanders, Island of Scrideuinnun, and over all the northern nations, and also over the Slavs who were in territories between the rivers Pene and Egidore. He granted a privilege to the see of Grado. He did not create any cardinals.

Death. June, or August, or October 913, probably poisoned by orders of Teodora Teofilatti, Roman senatrix and effective ruler of the city, because he tried to act independently from her. Buried in the pavement of the portico of the Vatican basilica. His tomb was destroyed during the demolition of the old basilica and the construction of the new one in the 16th and 17th centuries, but the complete text of his epitaph was recorded (1).

(6) 3. LANDONE (?-914)

Birth. (No date found), Sabina. Son of Count Taino (or Tainus, or Trani, or Tanni or Tami), a wealthy Lombard. He is also listed as Landus; as Landon; and as Lando.

Education. (No information found).

Cardinalate. Deacon cardinalis of the Holy Roman Church in a promotion celebrated at an unknown date between 904 and 911. It is very probable that he was the candidate of Teofilatto, consul and senator, financial director of the Holy See, and his ambitious and energetic wife Theodora, who dominated Rome at this time and effectively controlled the papacy.

Papacy. Elected pope in July or November 913. He kept his baptismal name as pope. He granted a privilege to the cathedral of S. Salvatore in Fornovo, Sabina, in memory of his father. The lack of information about his pontificate reflects the fact that it took place during a time of political crisis in Rome, devoid of documents. He did not create any cardinals. His pontificate lasted six months and eleven days.

Death. March or April 914, probably murdered on orders of Teodora Teofilatti, Roman senatrix, in order to have Giovanni, archbishop of Ravenna, become pope. Buried at the Vatican basilica (1). His tomb was destroyed during the demolition of the old basilica and the construction of the new one in the 16th and 17th centuries.
