Ss. Giovanni e Paolo
This title, called also Pammachus or Byzantis (Bizantys was a friend of Saint Jerome, father of Pammachius and son-in-law of Saint Paola), was erected about the end of the fifth century. It was later known as Pammachii sanctorum Johannis et Pauli, for two priests who belonged to it during the pontificate of Pope Saint Innocent I (401-417). According to the catalog of Pietro Mallio, composed during the pontificate of Alexander III (1159-1181), this title was attached to the Basilica of S. Lorenzo fuori le mura and its priests were to celebrate mass there in turn. The title today is known as Ss. Giovanni e Paolo.

(1) Cristofori lists a Cardinal Ulderico (1127?), who is probably the same person.
(2) Cristofori lists Cardinals Giovanni (1146-1200?) and Giacomo (1159) as occupants of this title but their existence has not been ascertained.

(4) According to Cristofori, Cardinal Pietro Blani (Pierre Blain) occupied this title from March 25, 1409 (?) to December 12 of that same year.

S. Girolamo dei Croati (degli Schiavoni)
On February 8, 1566, Pope Saint Pius V (1566-1572) established the title of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni. In 1570 the church was assigned to Cardinal Felice Peretti, who was later elected Pope Sixtus V. The old church was demolished by the pope's order in 1588, and the new one was started the same year. It was finished in a year, and consecrated in the Autumn of 1589. It was the only church that was started and finished by Sixtus V (1585-1590), who also took care of the finances in that period. The new church was given to the Croats, and by Bull of August 1, 1589, Sixtus V established a chapter that was to have 11 priests, who had to be of Croatian descent and had to speak the Croatian language. It is interesting that Sixtus V had some Croatian ancestry; that is why he gave so much care to the Croatian national church in Rome.

S. Lorenzo in Damaso
The title Damasus was established by Pope Saint Alexander I ca. 112. Pope Saint Damasus I (366-384), who, it is believed, occupied this title, confirmed its establishment in 366. Later, the title was renamed S. Lorenzo in Damaso. From 1532 until 1973, this title was assigned to the vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Church. The office was suppressed in that year. It appears in the lists of the sixth century, and at the end of the eighth century it acquired the name of "Saint Lawrence named after Damasus". From the twelfth century it became the title of S. Lorenzo in Damaso. According to the catalog of Pietro Mallio, composed during the pontificate of Alexander III (1159-1181), this title was attached to Saint Peter's Basilica and its priests were to celebrate mass there in turn. Pope Clement VII (1523-1534) with the Bull Etsi ad singula, July 5, 1532, assigned this title in perpetuity to the vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Church, regardless of his cardinalitial rank (deacon, priest, or commendatario). (1) Pope Saint Pius X (1903-1914) changed the name of the office to Chancellor by the apostolic constitution Sapienti consilio, June 29, 1908. The office of Chancellor, which dated from the IV Century, was abolished by Pope Paul VI (1963-1978) by the motu proprio Quo aptius, February 27, 1973.
(2) Annuaire Pontifical Catholique indicates that he could be the same person as his predecessor in 500.
(3) Cristofori lists a Cardinal Giorgio (?) (861?) but according to Annuaire Pontifical Catholic, he was cardinal priest of S. Lorenzo in Lucina and not of this title.
(4) Cristofori lists Cardinal Hugh de Saint-Victor, Can. Reg. of Saint Augustine, as occupant of this title in 1129? but he was created cardinal bishop of Frascati in 1139.
(5) Cristofori lists a Cardinal Gregorio in 1150 but his existence has not been ascertained.
(6) Cristofori lists Cardinal Uberto Allucingoli as occupant of this title in 1182 but Annuaire Pontifical Catholique indicates that he is mistaken because the title was occupied by Cardinal Uberto Crivelli at that time.
(7) There is confusion among the sources about the occupants of this title in 1216-1217.
(8) Hierarchia Catholica indicates that Cristofori lists Cardinal Tommaso da Frignano, O.Min., as occupant of this title from September to December 1378 but that he had been assigned to Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo on September 18, 1378 and occupied it until his death on November 19, 1381.

S. Lorenzo in Lucina
The title of S. Lorenzo in Lucina is an ancient one. It could have been, under another name, one of the titles established by Pope Saint Alexander I ca. 112. In this title, Lucinae, in 366, took place the election of Pope Saint Damasus. The title was confirmed by Pope Saint Benedict II ca. 684. Toward the end of the eighth century, its name became S. Lorenzo in Lucina. According to the catalog of Pietro Mallio, composed during the pontificate of Alexander III (1159-1181), this title was attached to the Basilica of S. Lorenzo fuori le mura and its priests were to celebrate mass there in turn. Customarily, this title for centuries was occupied by the most senior cardinal priest or protoprete.
