(1785-1866)

Birth. November 1 (1), 1785, Béla, diocese of Rozsnyó, Hungary (now Kosická Belá, archdiocese of Kosice, Slovakia). Son of Márton Scitovszky, rural school teacher, and Borbála Karácsonyi. Received the sacrament of baptism on November 1, 1785; and the sacrament of confirmation in 1794.

Education. Elementary studies in Jolsva and in the gymnasium of Rosznyó (today Roznava). Received the insignias of the clerical character and the minor orders on February 2, 1805. Then, studied in the Seminary of Trnava, earning a doctorate in Philosophy, October 1808. Studied at the University of Pest, where he obtained a doctorate in philosophy on October 25, 1808; and another in theology on April 2, 1813. Received the subdiaconate on October 29, 1809; and the diaconate on November 1, 1809.

Priesthood. Ordained, November 5, 1809. In the diocese of Rozsnyó (now Roznava, Slovakia), professor and rector of its minor seminary; professor of philosophy and theology of its seminary for ten years; custodian canon of its cathedral chapter, 1819; assessor of its episcopal consistory; archdeacon of Tornen and of Iászoven; canon of the cathedral chapter, 1824.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Rozsnyó January 28, 1828. Consecrated, March 25, 1828, Nagyvárad, by Franec Laicsak, bishop of Nagyvárad. Transferred to the see of Pécs, February 18, 1839. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Esztergom, September 28, 1849. Apostolic administrator of the diocese of Pécs, ad arbitrium Summus Pontifex et Sedis Apostolicæ, November 23, 1849 to January 6, 1852. Decorated with the grand cross of the Austrian Order of Sankt Stefan, 1849.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of March 7, 1853; received the red hat and the title of S. Croce in Gerusalemme, November 16, 1854.

Death. October 19, 1866, Budapest. Exposed in the metropolitan cathedral of Esztergom, where the funeral took place on October 23, 1866, and buried in that metropolitan cathedral.

In those days, it was customary to baptize the newborns as soon as possible, sometimes on the same day of their birth.

(29) 2. MORLOT, François-Nicholas-Madeleine
(1795-1862)

Birth. December 28 (1), 1795, Langres, France. Son of Nicolas François Morlot, a pastry chef, and Charlotte Grépin.

Education. Studied at Collège of Langres; and at the Major Seminary of Dijon in 1817. Preceptor at the house of the Marquis de Saint-Seine.

Vicar Capitular (1831-1832) during the vacant seat , resigned as Vicar General after the appointment of the new bishop, Claude Rey (September 1832). Canon of the cathedral (April 1833), he was appointed vicar general again (October 1838) after the resignation of Bishop Claude Rey.

Priesthood. Ordained, May 27, 1820, Dijon. In the diocese of Dijon, he was second vicar of the cathedral of Dijon (1820) and honorary canon of the cathedral (1825); vicar general, 1830; vicar capitular (1831-1832) during the sede vacante, resigned as vicar general after the appointment of the new bishop, Claude Rey (September 1832). Canon of the cathedral (April 1833); he was appointed vicar general again (October 1838) after the resignation of Bishop Rey.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Orléans, July 8, 1839. Consecrated, August 18, 1839, chapel of the Dames du Sacré Coeur, Paris, by Charles de Forbin-Janson, bishop of Nancy et Toul, assisted by Louis Blanquart de Bailleul, bishop of Versailles, and by Jean Lemercier, former bishop of Beauvais. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Tours, January 27, 1843.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest in the consistory of March 7, 1853; received the red hat and the title of Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo, June 27, 1853. Transferred to the metropolitan see of Paris, March 19, 1857.

Death. December 29, 1862, Paris. Exposed and buried in the metropolitan cathedral of Paris. His memorial is in the chapel of Saint Ferdinand in that cathedral.

Birth. August 9, 1789, Camerino. His baptismal name was Vincenzo Benedetto Giuseppe.

Education. Studied at theSeminary of Camerino. Entered the Order of the Friars Minor Capuchins, December 8, 1803, at the convent of Cingoli.

Priesthood. Ordained, February 22, 1812. Member of the comunity of the convent of Fabriano. For many years lector of philosophy and theology in the convent of Iesi. President of the Capuchin college for missions, Rome, September 30, 1843. Consultor of the S.C. of Bishops and Regulars, November 12, 1843; of the S.C. of Propaganda Fide, June 8, 1844; and of the S.C. of the Inquisition, March 26, 1847. Definitor general of his order, 1844.

Episcopate. Elected titular bishop of Tripoli, July 3 (1), 1848. Consecrated, July 9, 1848, basilica of XII Apostoli, Rome, by Cardinal Antonio Francesco Orioli, assisted by Girolamo D'Andrea, titular archbishop of Melitene, and by Domenico Lucciardi, titular archbishop of Damasco. Apostolic administrator of the diocese of Senigaglia ad beneplacitum Sanctae Sedis, August 22, 1848. Assistant at the Pontifical Throne, January 13, 1852.

Education. Studied at the Seminary of Ajaccio; at La Sapienza University, Rome, where he earned a doctorate in theology ad praemium in 1822; and ad honorem in 1825); then, did praxis in utroque iure, both canon and civil law, at the S.C. of the Tridentine Council, in 1825.

Priesthood. Ordained, 1816, Rome, by Luigi Sebastiani della Porta, bishop of Ajaccio. Vicar general in Cesena, ca.1827; and in Imola, November 23, 1829 to December 17, 1832, where he assumed de facto the government of the diocese when Cardinal Giacomo Giustiniani resided in Rome. Referendary prelate, February 28, 1832. Apostolic delegate in Rieti, April 1, 1833; in Frosinone, 1834; in Perugia, 1838; and in Macerata, 1841. Cleric of the Apostolic Chamber, April 25, 1845. Sacred orders. Ordained (no information found). He was Canon of Santa Maria in Via Lata, 1826-1841. Substitute of the Datary for the Spedizioni per la Via di Curia. Procurator of the Sacred College of Cardinals and Substitute secretary of the S.C. Consistorial, 1836. Secretary of the S.C. of Studies, February 1839. Auditor Sanctissimi, March 1, 1841 to November 28, 1845. Canon of the pariarchal Vatican basilica. Assessor of the S.C. of the Inquisition, November 28, 1845.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon in the consistory of March 7, 1853; received the red hat and the deaconry of S. Maria della Scala, March 10, 1853. Prefect of the economy of the S.C. of Propaganda Fide and of the Reverend Chamber of Despoilments, March 5, 1858 to 1860. Prefect of the S.C. of the Tridentine Council, September 26, 1860 until his death. President of the cardinalitial commisssion for the preparation of the First Vatican Council and president of the consulta for ecclesiastical discipline, 1867. Prefect of the S.C. of Ecclesiastical Immunity, which from 1879 was united to the prefecture of the S.C. of the Tridentine Council.

Death. October 28, 1881, Rome. Exposed in his deaconry and buried in the chapel of the archconfraternity of the Most Precious Blood, Campo Verano cemetry, Rome.

(33) 6. SANTUCCI, Vincenzo
(1796-1861)

Birth. February 18, 1796, Gorga, diocese of Anagni. His family belonged to the small nobility. Son of Ascenso Santucci and Clorinda Mazzetti. His siblings were Aloisius, Ignatius, Agatha and Theresia.

Education. Studied at Collegio Pamphilio, Rome.

Sacred orders. Ordained (no information found). Secretary of Cardinal Giacinto Placido Zurla, O.S.B.Cam. Minutante adjunct of the Secretariat of State, 1832-1844. Substitute of the Secretariat of State and secretary of the Cipher, February 26, 1844. Substitute for the second section of the Secretary of State, September 1846. Substitute, ad interim, of the first section of the Secretariat of State, July 24, 1847. In March 1848, once the two sections of the Secretariat of State were unified again, he became the sole substitute of the same and remained as such until April 1851. Secretary of the S.C. of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs and substitute of the Secretariat of State, July 11, 1850 to 1853. Consultor of the S.C. of the Holy Office, 1851.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon in the consistory of March 7, 1853; received the red hat and the deaconry of Ss. Vito e Modesto, March 10, 1853. Opted for the deaconry of S. Maria ad Martyres, June 23, 1854. Decorated with the grand cross of the Austrian Order of Sankt Stefan, 1855. Prefect of the S.C. of Studies, November 14, 1856 until his death. After suffering a heart attack, he was invited by a friend of his, Giacomo Botti, to spend a few days of rest at his residence in Rocca di Papa. It was there that he died of a sudden apoplexy.

Death. August 19 (1), 1861, Rocca di Papa. Exposed in the parochial church of Rocca di Papa and buried in the patriarchal Lateran basilica, Rome, according to his will (2).
