(1) 1. BATTAGLIA, Gozzio (ca. 1270-1348)

Birth. Ca. 1270, Rimini. Of a family of rich landowners, bankers, and merchants. His first name is also listed as Gozio and as Gotius; and his last name as de'Battagli; as Battaglini; and as Battagliani.

Education. He studied law.

Early life. Professor of law at the University of Coimbra in 1310. Praecentor in Carpentras. Canon of the cathedral chapters of Palencia, Burgos and Ravenna. Papal chaplain.

Episcopate. Elected titular Latin patriarch of Constantinople, June 14, 1335; occupied the see untl his promotion to the cardinalate. Consecrated (no information found). Legate of Pope Benedict XII in Sicily in 1338, together with Bishop Ratherius of Vaison; he excommunicated King Pedro of Aragón and placed an interdict over the kingdom if they did not recognize Robert d'Anjou as their legitimate king.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Prisca in the consistory of December 18, 1338; he entered the papal curia in Avignon on May 5, 1339. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI. He wrote Tractatus de Varys et Virtutibus (Tractatus de Varys et Virtutibus), a personal address to Galeatto Malatesta. He willed his personal library to his nephews Marco di Pietro and Guido di Fuscio.

Death. June 10, 1348, Avignon. Buried in the church of S. Agnese in Rimini (1).

(2) 2. DÉAULX, Bertrand de (?-1355)

Birth. (No date found), Blauzac (Blandiac), diocese of Uzès, France. His first name is also listed as Bertrando and as Bertrandus; and his last name as De Deocio; as Deucio; as De Deux; as d'Eux; and as Deaux.

Education. He studied law.

Early life. Provost of Embrun in 1319. Auditor of causes at the Apostolic Palace from 1322; he continued occupying the post after his promotion to the episcopate.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Embrun, August 26, 1323; occupied the see untl his promotion to the cardinalate. Consecrated (no information found). He was sent to Italy in 1333; at first as an adjunct to Cardinal Bertrand du Pouget, with whom he had some discrepancies; after the revolt of Bolonga in March 1334, he seems to have replaced Cardinal du Pouget, although his appointment as legate in the province of the Patrimony was not made until May 1335; as legate, he entered in Rome in December 1335; he issued several ordinances and constitutions that served as basis for the ones issued later by Cardinal Gil Álvarez de Albornoz, C.R.S.A..

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Marco in the consistory of December 18, 1338. Vice-chancellor of the Holy Roman Church toward 1340. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI. On June 2, 1344, he left Avignon for his legation in Catalonia. On August 26, 1346, he left for his legation in Sicily; the legation included the post of vicar general in Italia, by which he had to confront Cola di Rienzo in 1347; returned to Rome on November 17, 1348. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Sabina, November 4, 1348. He founded the Carthusian monastery in Avignon, which had his arms. Participated in the conclave of 1352, which elected Pope Innocent VI. In 1353, he published the disciplinary constitutions for the Ruthenian Church.

Death. October 21, 1355, Avignon. Buried in the church of Saint-Didier in Avignon, which he had founded and endowed (1).

Birth. Ca. 1290/1291, château of Maumont, parish of Rosiers d'Egletons, diocese of Tulle, France. Of a family of the lesser aristocracy of the lower Limousin. Second son of Guillaume Roger, seigneur of Rosier d'Eglentons. Brother of Cardinal Hugues Roger, O.S.B. (1342). Cousin of Cardinals Aymeric de Chalus (1342); Gérard de la Garde, O.P. (1342); and Guillaume d'Aigrefeuille, seniore (1350). Cousin or uncle of Cardinals Adhémar Robert (1342); Pierre de Cros (1350); and Gilles Aycelin de Montaigu (1361). Uncle of Cardinals Bernard de la Tour (1342); Guillaume de la Jugié (1342); Nicolas de Besse (1342); Pierre Roger de Beaufort (1348), future Pope Gregory XI; Raymond de Canilhac, C.R.S.A. (1350); Guillaume d'Aigrefeuille, iuniore, O.S.B.Clun. (1367); Pierre de la Jugié, O.S.B.Clun. (1375); Guy de Malsec (1375); and of Pseudocardinal Faydit d'Aigrefeuille, O.S.B. (1383). Education. Entered the Order of Saint Benedict (Benedictines) at the monastery of La Chaise-Dieu, when he was ten years old. Studied at the University of Paris; Pope John XXII granted him a doctorate in theology in May 1323.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Professor at the University of Paris. Preceptor of Emperor Charles IV. Prior of Saint-Pantal éon in Corb&ze. Prior of Saint-Baudile in Nîmes in 1324. Abbot of Fécamp in 1326. Provisor of the future La Sorbonne University, Paris, in 1340. He was a reputed orator and diplomat.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Arras, December 3, 1328. Consecrated (no information found). Promoted to the metropolitan see of Sens, November 24, 1329. Transferred to the metropolitan see of Rouen, December 14, 1330; occupied the see untl his promotion to the cardinalate. Legate or nuncio in London and Paris. He was nominated in 1333 to preach the crusade that was then being prepared. Guardian of the seal and chancellor of of King Philippe VI de Valois of France in 1334.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo in the consistory of December 18, 1338; entered the papal curia in Avignon on May 5, 1339. Participated in the conclave of 1342 and was elected pope. King Philippe VI of France was so interested in the election of Cardinal Roger to the papacy that he sent his son to Avignon to try to influence the electors; before the prince arrived, the conclave had unanimously chosen Cardinal Roger.

Papacy. Elected pope on May 7, 1342. Took the name Clement VI. Crowned on May 19, 1342, in the church of the Dominicans in Avignon, by Raymond Guillaume des Farges, protodeacon of S. Maria Nuova. He created twenty seven cardinals in four consistories.

Death. Thursday December 6, 1352, Avignon. Buried, temprrarily in the cathedral of Notres-Dams-des Doms, Avigonon; on April 8, 1353, his remains were translated to the choir of the abbey of La Chaise-Dieu, Auvergne, by Abbot Renaud de Montclar.

Birth. (No date found), Belpech, diocese of Mirepoix, France. Relative (nephew?) of Pope Benedict XII, on his mother's side. His last name is also listed as Curte; as Curti; and as Novelli. He was called the Cardinal Blanc because of his religious habit.

Education. Entered the Order of the Cistercians in the monastery of Boulbonne, Toulouse. Studied at the University of Paris and obtained a doctorate in theology. Magister in theology.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Abbot of the monastery of Boulbonne.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Nîmes, April 3, 1337. Consecrated (no information found). Transferred to the see of Albi, December 3, 1337; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of Ss. Quattro Coronati in the consistory of December 18, 1338. Intervened in several processes against heresey or dissidence such as the one that tried Nicolas d'Autrecourt, 1340 to 1346. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI. Named legate in Lombardy, he left for his legation on October 9, 1342 and returned on October 30, 1343. Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals, May 31, 1348 until his death. Cardinal protoprete in June 1349. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Frascati, December 18, 1350. He completed the construction and funded sixteen grants in the collège of the Bernardins in Paris. Participated in the conclave of 1352, which elected Pope Innocent VI.

Death. June 12, 1361, of the plague, Avignon. Buried in Avignon (no further information found).

Birth. (No date found), Saverdun, diocese of Pamiers, France. Son of Arnaud d'Aure, viscount de l'Arboust, and Brunessend de Lavedan. His first name is also listed as Bertrand and as Bertrando; and his last name as de Albia. He was called the Cardinal of Rodez.

Education. Licentiate in law.

Early life. Papal chaplain. Dean of Beauvais.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Rodez, January 31, 1336; took possession of the see in August 1336; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate. Consecrated (no information found). Nuncio in Castilla and Portugal in 1337. In July 1343, he succeeded Cardinal Andrea Ghini Malpighi as legate before the king of Aragón to mediate in the conflict with the king of Mallorca.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Ciriaco alle Terme in the consistory of December 18, 1338; he entered the papal curia in Avignon on August 2, 1339. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI. Legate before King Pedro of Aragón in 1347; he presided over a council in Barcelona. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Porto e Santa Rufina on January 19, 1349. He was a friend of Francesco Petrarca, who often mentioned him in his letters.

Death. November 23, 1350, Avignon. Buried (no information found).

Birth. (No date found), Toulouse, France. Of the counts of Montfort. His first name is also listed as Ramón. He is also listed as Raymundus de Tolosa. He was a descendant of Simon de Montfort.

Education. Entered the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (Mercedarians).

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). He went to Africa to rescue slaves. He was renowned for his science and holiness.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Stefano in Monte Celio in the consistory of December 18, 1338; when the news of his promotion reached Barcelona, he had already died.

Death. Before January 19, 1339, Barcelona. Buried (no information found).
