(17) 1. COMMINGES, Jean-Raymond de (?-1348)

Birth. (No date found), Comminges, France. Son of Count Bernard VI of Comminges and Laure de Montfort. His last name is also listed as Convenis.

Education. (No information found).

Early life. Canon of the metropolitan cathedral chapter of Narbonne.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Maguelone, July 29, 1309; he had not yet received the necessary sacred orders or reached the canonical age. Consecrated (no information found). Attended the Council of Vienne, 1311-1312, which suppressed the Order of the Knights Templar (1); he subscribed the decrees that were published. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Toulouse, November 13, 1317; he was its first archbishop; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate. He celebrated a synod in June 1319. Founded in Toulouse the convent of Saint-Pantaléon of the Canonesses Regular of Saint Augustine, which he richly endowed.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Vitale in the consistory of December 18, 1327. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Porto e Santa Rufina in mid-1331. He entered the papal curia in Avignon in March 1331. Participated in the conclave of 1334, which, after he declined the election to the pontificate, elected Pope Benedict XII. In 1341, he was the arbiter in the difference between the bishop of Maguelone and Philipp de Levis concerning the jurisdiction of the Castle of Poissonne. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI. He wrote a book on the passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ and a collection of sermons for the holidays.

Death. 1348 (or November 20, 1344 or in 1349), Avignon. Buried (no information found).

(1) Its full name was Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon; the order was suppressed by Pope Clement V because of the pressure of King Philippe V of France in spite of the fact that the pope had found the knights innocent of heresy in trials that took place in Rome between 1307 and 1312. In October 2007, the Vatican Archives displayed copies of the parchments that showed the pope's original decision declaring them innocent; the documents were published in a limited edition, leather-bound volume 800 copies; one copy went to Pope Benedict XVI and the rest went for sale to libraries, collectors and "templar associations".

(18) 2. CECCANO, Annibaldo di (ca. 1280/1282-1350)

Birth. Ca. 1280/1282, castello of Ceccano, Campagna. Of a noble family. Son of Count Berardo II de Ceccano and Perna Caetani-Stefaneschi. Nephew of Cardinal Giacomo Caetani Stefaneschi (1295), on his mother's side. Other cardinals of the family were Gregorio Gaetani (1099); Giordano di Ceccano, O.Cist. (1188); Stefano di Ceccano, O.Cist. (1212); and Teobaldo di Ceccano, O.Cist. (1275). He is also listed as Annibaldo Annibaldi (Gaetani) di Ceccano; and as Annibaldo Gaetani da Ceccano; and his first name is also listed as Annibal; and as Hanibaldus; and his last name as Gaetani.

Education. Studied theology at the University of Paris from 1308; obtained a maître in theology; and also, a doctorate in canon law.

Early life. Obtained a benefice in the diocese of Aquino on December 25, 1296. Provost of the church of S. Pietro di Foresta, diocese of Pontecorvo. Canon of the cathedral chapters of Ferentino and Veroli. He obtained the rural church of S. Nicola di Gandulphis, diocese of Terracina, in the pontificate of Pope John XXII; he resigned the post at the end of 1325. In 1313, he resigned a canonicate in the cathedral chapter of Alatri. Canon of the cathedral chapters of Braga and Viseu. Canon of the cathedral chapter of Arras, with dispensation of residence obtained by his uncle the cardinal; later, in 1318, its archdeacon. Canon of the cathedral chapters of Reimas and Paris, ca. 1316. He received the diaconate in 1318. Provisor of the maison of the Sorbonne, University of Paris in 1320. In 1323, he became canon of the chapter of the patriarchal Vatican basilica, Rome. In 1326, he was named canon and archdeacon of Beaune.

Episcopate. Elected archbishop of Naples, May 5, 1326; on that same day, Pope John XXII informed Roberto, king of Naples, and the clergy of the archdiocese, of his election; occupied the see until December 23, 1327, when he was succeeded by his relative Giovanni Orsini. He was ordained priest and consecrated bishop before June 1, 1326. He resided in his see until the end of 1327, when he was called back to Avignon.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Lorenzo in Lucina in the consistory of December 18, 1327. Cardinal protoprete toward 1330. In 1331, he solved a grave discord between the bishop of Paris and La Sorbonne University. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Frascati in 1333. Participated in the conclave of 1334, which elected Pope Benedict XII. He was named legate with the charge of reconciling Queen Giovanna I of Naples and Lajos, king of Hungary, who had gone to Naples to vindicate the assassination of his brother, Endre, husband of that queen. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI. Archpriest of the patriarchal Vatican basilica in 1342. Named legate, with Cardinal Pierre des Prés, to promote the peace between the kings of France and England; he left Avignon on July 1, 1342; he was present at the battle of Crêcy; he dedicated the church of La Sorbonne University in Paris on October 13, 1347. In 1347, he was sent as legate to Germany, before Karl, king of the Romans, who had been elected emperor instead of Ludwig von Bavaria. He left as legate for Lombardy on January 15, 1349. He went to Benevento to determine the borders of that duchy with the Papal States. He governed Rome during with ample faculties during the Jubilee of 1350; he excommunicated Cola di Rienzo for having pierced his red hat with a dart. He went to Ceccano in 1350 while on his way to Naples. He wrote poetry and corresponded with Francesco Petrarca.

Death. July 17 (or in August) 1350 (it is rumored that he was poisoned), castle of S. Giorgio, near Monte Cassino, Campagna, while returning to Naples. His body, dressed in a Franciscan habit and embalmed, was transferred to Rome and buried in the tomb of his uncle the cardinal, in the chapel of Ss. Lorenzo e Giorgio in the patriarchal Vatican basilica.

Birth. Ca. 1280/1285, Canté, Saverdun, diocese of Pamiers, France. His father was perhaps a miller (1). Nephew of Cardinal Arnaud Nouvel, O.Cist. (1310), on his mother's side (2). Relative (uncle?) of Cardinal Guillaume Court, O.Cist. (1338). Relative of Pope John XXII (?). His first name is also listed as Jacopo and as Iacobus; and his last name as Fornerio. He was called the Cardinal Blanc because of the color of his religious habit.

Education. Entered the Order of Cîteaux (Cistercians) in the abbey of Boulbonne, diocese of Mirepoix. Resided in Collège des Bernardins, Paris; obtained a doctorate in theology at the Theological Faculty of Paris.

Priesthood. Ordained (no further information found). Abbot of the monastery of Fontfroide, archdiocese of Narbonne, in 1311; succeeded his uncle the cardinal. Inquisitor of the province of Toulouse.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Pamiers, March 19, 1317. Consecrated, Rome, by Cardinal Niccolò Alberti, O.P., bishop of Ostia e Velletri. He left the papal curia on August 21, 1317. Transferred to the see of Mirepoix, March 2, 1326; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Prisca in the consistory of December 18, 1327. Cardinal protoprete toward 1333. Participated in the conclave of 1334 and was elected pope.

Papacy. Elected pope on December 20, 1334, in Avignon. Took the name Benedict XII. Crowned on January 8, 1335, church of the Dominicans, Avignon, by Cardinal Napoleone Orsini, protodeacon of S. Adriano. He created seven cardinals in one consistory.

Death. April 25, 1342, in odor of sanctity, Avignon. Buried in the cathedral of Notre-Dame des Doms, Avignon; his tomb was almost totally destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 19th century. The Cistercian martyrology venerates him as a blessed.

Birth. (No date found), Mortemart, diocese of Limoges, France. Of a modest family. His last name is also listed as Gouin; as Gauvain; as Grouin; as Gauvaing; as Govani; as Morthemard; as Mortuomari; as Mortomare; and as Mortuummare. He was called the Cardinal of Viviers. Uncle of Cardinal Pierre de Banac, O.S.B. (1368).

Education. He studied law.

Early life. Professor of law at the University of Toulouse. Canon chantre of the metropolitan cathedral chapter of Bourges. Counselor of King Charles le Bel of France. He had received the subdiaconate at the time of his promotion to the episcopate.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Viviers, June 16, 1322. Consecrated (no information found). Plenipotentiary of the king of France to conclude the peace with England, May 25, 1325. Transferred to the see of Auxerre, October 7, 1325; took possession the following November 2; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Stefano al Monte Celio in the consistory of December 18, 1327. Commendatario of the title of Ss. Marcellino e Pietro in January 1328 (1). In 1334, he founded in Mortemart a convent of Carmelites, with a hospital; a convent of Augustinians, with a collège; and a monastery of Carthusians. Participated in the conclave of 1334, which elected Pope Benedict XII.

Death. April 14, 1335, Avignon. Buried in a church that he had built in Mortemart.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Arras, October 29, 1320; on February 1, 1321, he was granted permisssion to prorogue his episcopal consecration. Consecrated (no information found). Transferred to the see of Chartres, May 21, 1326; he never visited his diocese; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate. Together with Pierre de Mortemart, bishop of Auxerre and future cardinal, he was sent by King Charles le Bel of France to the English court to negotiate the peace between the two kingdoms.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Cartagena. Murcia, September 3, 1326; occupied the see until his promotion to the cardinalate. Consecrated (no information found).

Cardinalate. Created cardinal priest of S. Prassede in the consistory of December 18, 1327; the pope sent him the red hat to Castilla. Named legate before King Alfonso XI of Castilla to promote the peace between the monarch and the Castillian nobles. Together with Cardinal Bertrand de Montfavez, he was named legate before the kings of France and England; he received special powers for France; he left for his legation on July 28, 1337; on August 13, 1337, Pope Benedict XII asked the cardinal to be the arbiter in a dispute between Thierry de Heinsberg and the diocese of Liège concerning the county of Looz; the cardinals legate were witnesses of a transaction between the bishop and the cathedral chapter of Thérouanne on November 29, 1337; they were charged with providing precise reports about the position that the Church should take with King Edward III of England, who had received the title of imperial vicar from Emperor Ludwig von Bavaria; the sentence of excommunication against the English king was sent to the two legates; they returned to the papal curia in Avignon on September 20, 1340. With Cardinal Gómez Barroso's support, Gil Carrillo de Albornoz obtained the archdiocese of Toledo on May 13, 1338. Cardinal primoprete in December 1338. Opted for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Sabina in August 1341. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI.

Death. July 14, 1348, Avignon. Buried in the church of the Dominicans, monastery of Sainte-Praxéde, near Avignon, which he had built in 1341 (1); for this reason, it was called the Spanish church.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Angelo in Pescheria in the consistory of December 18, 1327. Participated in the conclave of 1334, which elected Pope Benedict XII. Archpriest of the patriarchal Lateran basilica in 1342. Participated in the conclave of 1342, which elected Pope Clement VI. He persuaded the pope to send several Franciscan friars to preach the Gospel in Armenia. He was a friend of Francesco Petrarca, who mentioned him in his letters. He authored a life of the popes from Saint Peter to Boniface VIII.

Death. July 3, 1348 (2), of the plague, Avignon. Buried (no information found)
