(10) 10. BERARDO (ca. 1079/1080-1130)

Birth. Ca. 1079/1080, castle of Colli di Monte Bove, near Pescina, diocese of Marsi. Son of Berardo, of the counts of Marsi and of Sangro, and his wife, Teodosia. He is also listed as Berardo Berardi and as Berardo dei Marsi.

Education. He spent his childhood with the canons of the church of S. Sabina, then the cathedral church of Marsi; he resided with them up to receiving the minor order of the acolytes. At seventeen, he left Marsi and studied with Benedictines at Monte Cassino for several years.

Early life. Pope Paschal II called him to Rome, where he received the subdiaconate and was engaged in several positions. He was sent to administer Campagna as papal delegate. He had a confrontation with Count Pietro Colonna, who imprisoned him in a dried well.

Cardinalate. Created cardinal deacon of S. Adriano in a consistory celebrated in 1099 (1). Opted for the order of cardinal priests and the title of S. Crisogono ca. 1100, when he was thirty years old (2). Subscribed papal bulls issued between April 14, 1100 and March 20, 1105.

Episcopate. Elected bishop of Marsi in 1110. Consecrated (no information found). As a bishop, he fought against simony and the concubinage of the clergy, helped and protected the poor, and was forced into exile several times.

Death. November 3, 1130, the day he had predicted he would die, Santa Sabina. He gave all his possessions to the poor. Buried in Santa Sabina, Marsi.

Beatification. In Marsi, he was venerated both in life and after his death because of the miracles that he performed. Pope Pius VII confirmed his veneration as a blessed on May 10, 1802. He is the patron saint of the diocese of Marsi, where his body is kept.
